How to Apply for a Togo Visa in Washington D.C.

Washington, D.C. is the capital of the United States and is an important global city that attracts visitors from all over the world.  The Washington, D.C. Metropolitan Area—which includes the District of Columbia and parts of Virginia, Maryland, and West Virginia—is America’s sixth-largest metropolis and has a population of 6.3 million people.  Cities within this area (apart from the District of Columbia) include Alexandria, Annandale, Arlington, Fairfax, Falls Church, and Reston—all in Virginia—along with the Maryland towns of Bethesda, College Park, Frederick, Gaithersburg, Rockville, and Silver Spring.  The Washington, D.C. Togo has a population of 8.3 million people made up of 37 ethnic groups, the largest being the Ewe and Kabye.  The country is located along the Gulf of Guinea and is bordered by Ghana, Benin, and Burkina Faso.  Lomé, Togo’s capital, will be the entry point for most visitors from Washington, D.C, either through its international airport or its land border with Ghana.  This city has many excellent restaurants offering local Togolese and French cuisine.  There are also swanky hotels such as Hôtel 2 Février near Monument de L’independence, and private establishments along the beach like Marcelo Beach Club where you can enjoy a cocktail and take-in the sea breeze.  No visit to Lomé is complete without visiting The Grand Marché, a market where tourists can chat up the locals while shopping for Togolese products.  Village Artisanal is another good destination for handicrafts.  Others wanting to know more about local culture and Vodun (Voodoo) can visit Akodessawa Fetish Market.  Just outside of Lomé is Lake Togo and the town of Togoville, which has recreation areas and attractions such as Notre Dame de Togoville and Maison de Esclaves.  Those interested in nature can visit the coffee plantations and waterfalls near the town of Kpalimé.  Chateau Viale, north of Kpalimé, has mountain views. 

Obtaining a Togo Visa from Washington, D.C.

Visas for Togo are issued by the Togolese government in the United States.  The government of Togo is represented by their embassy located in Washington, D.C. along with their office in New York City, which is the Permanent Mission of Togo to the United Nations.  To apply for a Togo visa from Washington, D.C., you can either apply for an electronic visa or apply for the traditional visa sticker that is placed in one of the pages of your passport.  The apply for the electronic visa you will visit the Togo Voyage website and complete the form by first creating an account.  Here is the link to the website: https://voyage.gouv.tg/.  To obtain the traditional visa sticker, you will fill out the visa application found on the embassy website and send your original passport and supporting documents to the embassy by US Mail, FedEx, or UPS.  Here is the address:

You should include a self-addressed USPS (US Postal Service Express Mail or Priority Mail), FedEx, or UPS prepaid envelope (please make note of the tracking number) so the embassy can return your passport and visa to your home or office. 

The government fee for the visa is $140 and the processing time is 10 business days plus transit time. We recommend applying for the visa at least 4 weeks before your departure.  If you need the visa faster, please contact our company to inquire about expedited services.

Other things to consider:

  • Visas for Togo may be issued on arrival at the airport in Lomé and at the major land border crossings, however, visitors to the country are advised to obtain their visa from the embassy in Washington, D.C. before starting their journey.
  • U.S. citizens must have a valid visa and a passport that does not expire within six months of your date of entry into Togo.
  • Your U.S. passport must be signed; the signature page of your passport is located opposite the data page that has your name and photo.
  • All visitors to Togo are required to have a valid World Health Organization (WHO) card with yellow fever vaccination.
