The Middle East and North Africa (MENA) is a region composed of 20 countries and has a population of 550 million people. This region is often associated with Arabs and Muslims since they make up the majority of the population, but MENA is also the birthplace of Judaism and Christianity, and is home to several ethnoreligious groups including Jews, Copts and Druze along with Turkic peoples, Assyrians, Yazidis, Berbers, Persians, Kurds and other Iranian peoples. There are several other ethnicities native to the region, and many nationalities that have migrated to MENA for work including Indians, Pakistanis, Nepalis, Bangladeshis, and Filipinos.
As the birthplace of Christianity, Islam, and Judaism, MENA is an important travel destination for many Americans wanting a deeper connection to their faith. Israel is the nation state of the Jewish people and its largest city—Jerusalem—is home to many sacred sites of all three religions including Temple Mount, The Western Wall and Church of the Holy Sepulchre. Saudi Arabia hosts two of Islam’s holiest sites, Mecca and Medina. Umayyad Mosque in Syria is one of the largest and oldest mosques in the world. The land around Jordan River Valley in Jordan is also a sacred area for followers of all three religions.
