Turkmenistan – one of the most repressive and isolated countries in the world – is also one of the least visited nations for travelers from Milwaukee.  However, cautious, adventurous travelers who are not deterred by the difficult process for obtaining a Turkmen visa can enjoy historic, cultural and religious sites, as well as ancient Silk Road trading posts, rare desert wildlife, and resorts on the Caspian Sea.

More than 6.5 million people live in the former Soviet republic, making it one of the most sparsely populated countries in Asia (the population of Turkmenistan is only slightly larger than Wisconsin’s population of 5.9 million).  Turkmenistan is bordered by Afghanistan, Kazakhstan, Iran, and Uzbekistan.  For centuries, Turkmenistan has been a trade thoroughfare, as the ancient Silk Road spans the country.  In recent years, its major international trade activities have revolved around its large oil and natural gas reserves.

Puerto Rico has a population of 3.2 million people and a land area of 3,425 square miles, making the "Island of Enchantment" America’s largest territory and third largest island by area.  San Juan is the capital of Puerto Rico and is the second oldest capital city in the Americas (founded by Europeans) and the oldest capital city in the United States.  Located in the Caribbean Sea, Puerto Rico is about 1,000 miles southeast of Miami and can be reached by air from nearly two dozen direct flights from the continental United States.  The San Juan metropolitan area includes the municipalities of Bayamon, Carolina, Caguas, Guaynabo and Trujillo Alto.  Other major cities in Puerto Rico include Ponce, Arecibo, and Mayaguez.  Although Puerto Rico is well known for its beautiful beaches and tropical landscape, the island is also home to a decent-size pharmaceutical manufacturing sector.  International trade with China and other countries around the world is still limited due to Puerto Rico’s commonwealth status under the U.S. federal government, so the island’s future depends heavily on economic policies created in Washington, D.C.  Although Puerto Rico does not have close economic ties with China, there is some cultural familiarity due to the few thousand Chinese who live on the island.

Located on the western shore of the Mediterranean Sea, the Republic of Lebanon was part of the Ottoman Empire for more than 400 years before coming under French rule after World War I.  The country gained independence from France in 1943, which was followed by both civil war and armed conflict with neighboring Syria and Israel.  In recent decades, Lebanon has evolved into one of the most culturally influential countries in the Middle East, and is a destination that should not be overlooked by anyone in Houston desiring a deeper understanding of this region.  The republic offers a unique blend of Arabic and European influences, with colorful sites ranging from Roman temples and Malluk mosques to Crusader Castles and broad French-built boulevards.  While Arabic (Levantine Arabic) is the official language, French and English are commonly spoken, reflecting both its colonial history and its emerging role in global commerce.

Stretching from the Caspian Sea to the Great Caucasus Mountains, the culture of Azerbaijan reflects strong Turkish, Iranian, and Russian influences that span centuries.  The ancient Silk Road trading route that connected Europe and Asia runs through Azerbaijan.  During its long history, parts of the country had been ruled by Iran, Turkey and Russia.  After the fall of the Soviet Union in the early 1990s, the country gained independence as the Republic of Azerbaijan.  However, since then, an extended border war with neighboring Armenia and conflicts with separatist forces in the Nagorno-Karabakh region have plagued the republic.

Seattle is the largest city in America’s Pacific Northwest region and is located in the state of Washington.  The Seattle metropolitan area has a population of 4 million people and is the fifteenth-largest metropolis in the United States.  Known as the “Emerald City”, Seattle is situated in a magnificent natural environment along the Puget Sound, surrounded by evergreen forests, mountains, and water.  The Seattle metropolitan area is the headquarters of many famous companies that are achieving great success in China, including Starbucks, which plans to have over 9,000 stores in the country by 2025.  The Seattle metropolitan area includes the cities of Tacoma, Federal Way, Kent, Everett, Renton, Edmonds, Kirkland, Redmond, and Bellevue, which is home to a large population of immigrants and visitors from China.  As the closest U.S. port to China in the lower 48 states, it should be no surprise that Seattle has one of the largest populations of Chinese and Americans of Chinese heritage in the United States.  Chinese culture is not hard to find in Seattle—the city is home to media outlets like the Seattle Chinese Post and Chinese Radio Seattle.  There is also the Seattle Asian Art Museum, which has an excellent collection of Chinese Art.  And the Emerald City is home to the China Club of Seattle.
