How to Apply for a Sierra Leone Visa in Seattle

Seattle is the largest city in America’s Pacific Northwest region and located in the state of Washington.  The Seattle metropolitan area has a population of 4 million people and is the fifteenth-largest metropolis in the United States.  Known as the “Emerald City”, Seattle is situated in a magnificent natural environment, surrounded by evergreen forests, mountains, and water.  Having no shortage of scenic views, outdoor activities, cultural events, trendy restaurants and coffee shops, it is no surprise that Seattle is a popular tourist destination with over 40 million visitors coming to the city each year. The Seattle metropolitan area is the headquarters of 11 Fortune 500 companies including famous consumer brands like Starbucks, Nordstrom, Costco, Amazon, and Microsoft.  Just 100 miles south of the Canadian border, Seattle is America's northernmost metropolis.  The Seattle metropolitan area includes the cities of Tacoma, Bellevue, Kent, Everett, Renton, Kirkland, and Redmond.  The population of Sierra Leoneans in Seattle is small since most immigrants from West Africa tend to settle on the East Coast of the U.S.  Seattle is home to several humanitarian aid organizations like the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, that have donated millions of dollars to tackle public health issues in Sierra Leone.

Sierra Leone is a West African country of 7.1 million people with beautiful white-sand beaches, scenic mountains, and tropical forests.  English is Sierra Leone’s official language, but Krio is the national language spoken on the streets of Freetown—the nation's capital and largest city.  Sierra Leone is composed of several ethnic groups including Mende, Temne, Limba, Kono, Mandingo, Krio, and others.  This is a poor country whose economy depends on mining and agriculture, but it is also a country of rich fertile land with untapped potential.  However, Sierra Leone must first develop its infrastructure, presenting opportunities for entrepreneurs in cities like Seattle to help advance the nation’s construction, energy, and education sectors.  The government of Sierra Leone is working to develop its human capital and has launched a program to provide free education for primary and secondary school children.  Sierra Leone is the first nation in Africa to have a Chief Innovation Officer (David Sengeh), and he has met with Seattle’s Bill Gates to discuss different issues facing the country.  On the tourist front, Sierra Leone is emerging as a popular destination as more Americans gain interest in learning about their ancestral heritage and discover their connection to the country through DNA tests.

Obtaining a Sierra Leone Visa from Seattle

Washington, D.C. 20009-1605

It is important to review the requirements for visas on the Sierra Leone embassy website and ensure your application and all supporting documents are accurate.  Here is the link to the embassy website with detailed information: Visa Services | Republic of Sierra Leone Embassy in United States of America (embassyofsierraleone.net).  You will also include a self-addressed USPS (US Postal Service Express Mail or Priority Mail), FedEx, or UPS prepaid envelope (please make note of the tracking number) along with a money order or cashier’s check made payable to “Embassy of Sierra Leone” to pay the visa fee (cash payments or personal checks are not accepted).  The visa fee for U.S. citizens is $160 and the processing time will take about one week to process plus transit time.  If you need the visa faster, there is an option to pay an additional $50 to have the visa processed in one or two days.  If you absolutely must have the visa processed in one day, we suggest appearing in person at the embassy or hiring a visa agent to assist with the process.

Other things to consider:

  • It may be possible to obtain a single-entry visa on arrival at Lungi International Airport (Freetown), however, it is recommended that you obtain a visa in advance at the embassy before your trip to ensure smooth boarding on your departing flight and easy-entry into the country. Americans will be issued a 3-year multiple-entry visa by the embassy.
  • Your U.S. passport must be signed; the signature page of your passport is located opposite the data page that has your name and photo.
  • All visitors to Sierra Leone are required to have a valid World Health Organization (WHO) card with yellow fever vaccination. Please use the following link from the Center for Disease Control website to find the nearest clinic offering the yellow fever vaccine: Search for Stamaril yellow fever vaccination clinics | Travelers' Health | CDC
  • It is recommended to purchase travel insurance before any international trip in case of medical emergencies.  We advise getting the Geo Blue Voyager Single Trip Plan.
