How to Apply for a Sierra Leone Visa in Los Angeles

Los Angeles is America’s second most populous city after New York.  Greater Los Angeles—which includes Los Angeles County, San Bernardino County, Riverside County, Ventura County, and Orange County—has a population of nearly 19 million people.  If Greater Los Angeles were its own country, it would be the 15th largest economy in the world (its GDP is more than twice the size of the combined economies of Nigeria and Sierra Leone).  Known for its endless sprawl, Greater Los Angeles is the largest metropolitan region in the United States by land area and includes over 200 cities such as Santa Monica, Pasadena, Beverly Hills, Culver City, Burbank, Long Beach, Carson, Irvine, Anaheim, and Inglewood, which is a sister city of Bo, Sierra Leone (the country’s second largest city).  The immigrant population of Sierra Leoneans in Los Angeles is not huge, but the area is home to the Southern California United Brothers and Sisters of Sierra Leone, a nonprofit organization hosting events and providing services both locally and in Africa.  The city is also home to the James S. Coleman African Studies Center at University of California, Los Angeles, which is a great resource for residents of Southern California interested in networking with individuals having experience in Sierra Leone.

Sierra Leone is a West African country of 7.1 million people with beautiful white-sand beaches, scenic mountains, tropical forests, and rustic coastal islands.  English is Sierra Leone’s official language, but Krio is the national language spoken on the streets of Freetown—Sierra Leone’s capital and largest city with over one million residents.  Sierra Leone is composed of several ethnic groups including Mende, Temne, Limba, Kono, Mandingo, Krio, and others.  This is a poor country whose economy depends on mining and agriculture, but it is also a country of rich fertile land with untapped potential.  The government of Sierra Leone is encouraging American entrepreneurs in cities like Los Angeles to open businesses and make investments into the country.  With the rise of at-home DNA tests to determine genealogy, many Americans are discovering their ancestral connection to Sierra Leone, creating opportunities to grow the local tourism industry as more people gain curiosity about this country and want to travel here.  Sierra Leone has even offered full citizenship to those Americans with DNA test results linking them to one of the country’s ethnic groups.  Hollywood actor Isaiah Washington was granted Sierra Leone citizenship based on his link to the Mende ethnic group.

Obtaining a Sierra Leone Visa from Los Angeles

Visas for Sierra Leone are issued by the Sierra Leonean government in the United States.  The government of Sierra Leone is represented by the embassy located in Washington, D.C.  To apply for a Sierra Leone visa from Los Angeles, you can appear in person at the embassy or you can send the required application documents by US Mail, FedEx, or UPS to this address:

Embassy of Sierra Leone
1701 19th Street, NW
Washington, D.C. 20009-1605

It is important to review the requirements for visas on the Sierra Leone embassy website and ensure your application and all supporting documents are accurate.  Here is the link to the embassy website with detailed information: Visa Services | Republic of Sierra Leone Embassy in United States of America (embassyofsierraleone.net).  You will also include a self-addressed USPS (US Postal Service Express Mail or Priority Mail), FedEx, or UPS prepaid envelope (please make note of the tracking number) along with a money order or cashier’s check made payable to “Embassy of Sierra Leone” to pay the visa fee (cash payments or personal checks are not accepted).  The visa fee for U.S. citizens is $160 and the processing time will take about one week to process plus transit time.  If you need the visa faster, there is an option to pay an additional $50 to have the visa processed in one or two days.  If you absolutely must have the visa processed in one day, we suggest appearing in person at the embassy or hiring a visa agent to assist with the process.

Other things to consider:

  • It may be possible to obtain a single-entry visa on arrival at Lungi International Airport (Freetown), however, it is recommended that you obtain a visa in advance at the embassy before your trip to ensure smooth boarding on your departing flight and easy-entry into the country. Americans will be issued a 3-year multiple-entry visa by the embassy.
  • Your U.S. passport must be signed; the signature page of your passport is located opposite the data page that has your name and photo.
  • All visitors to Sierra Leone are required to have a valid World Health Organization (WHO) card with yellow fever vaccination. Please use the following link from the Center for Disease Control website to find the nearest clinic offering the yellow fever vaccine: Search for Stamaril yellow fever vaccination clinics | Travelers' Health | CDC
  • It is recommended to purchase travel insurance before any international trip in case of medical emergencies.  We advise getting the Geo Blue Voyager Single Trip Plan.
