How to Apply for a Liberia Visa in Seattle

Seattle is the largest city in America’s Pacific Northwest region and located in the state of Washington.  The Seattle metropolitan area has a population of 4 million people and is the fifteenth-largest metropolis in the United States.  Known as the “Emerald City”, Seattle is situated in a magnificent natural environment, surrounded by evergreen forests, mountains, and water.  Having no shortage of scenic views, outdoor activities, cultural events, trendy restaurants and coffee shops, it is no surprise that Seattle is a popular tourist destination with over 40 million visitors coming to the city each year. Just 100 miles south of the Canadian border, Seattle is America's northernmost metropolis.  The Seattle metropolitan area includes the cities of Tacoma, Bellevue, Kent, Everett, Renton, Kirkland, and Redmond.  There are an estimated 1,000 Liberian immigrants living in Seattle and the area is home to the Liberian Association of Washington State.  Seattle is also home to several humanitarian aid organizations like the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and the Paul G. Allen Family Foundation who have donated millions of dollars to tackle public health issues in Liberia.

Liberia is a West African country of over 5 million people that is about 3/5 the size of Washington state by land area.  Visitors to Liberia fly into Roberts International Airport, located in the town of Harbel, which is home to the 4-star Farmington Hotel.  The airport has a modern passenger terminal and will soon have a new cargo terminal that will support the country’s ability to export high-value, perishable agricultural products to Europe, America, and other African nations.  Liberia’s economy relies on the exportation of minerals and agricultural commodities through its seaports of Monrovia (the country’s capital) and Buchanan, along with remittances from the Liberians living abroad in cities like Seattle.  Doing business in Liberia is not easy, but the country has lots of potential across multiple sectors of its economy, particularly in agriculture and tourism.  Liberia is gaining in popularity as a tourist destination for heritage tours as more Americans want to understand the culture and history of Americo-Liberian settlements like Greenville and Careysburg.  Americans also enjoy Liberia’s beach resorts, wildlife sactuaries, national parks and nature reserves (like Sapo, Gola, and Nimba), along with cultural attractions like its flavorful foods, arts and crafts, and the country’s growing nightlife and music scene.

Obtaining a Liberian Visa from Seattle

Visas for Liberia are issued by the Liberian government in the United States.  The Liberian government is represented by three consulates in New York City, Atlanta, and Minneapolis, along with one embassy located in Washington, D.C.  To apply for a Liberian visa from Seattle, you can appear in person at the embassy or you can send the required application documents by US Mail, FedEx, or UPS to this address:

Embassy of the Republic of Liberia
5201 16th Street N.W.
Washington, D.C. 20011

It is important to review the requirements for visas on the Liberian embassy website and ensure your application and all supporting documents are accurate.  Here is the link to the embassy website with detailed information:  Embassy of Liberia - Consular Services (liberianembassyus.org).  You will also bring a self-addressed USPS (US Postal Service Express Mail or Priority Mail), FedEx, or UPS self-addressed prepaid envelope (please make note of the tracking number) along with a money order made payable to “Embassy of Liberia” to pay the visa fee.  The visa fee for U.S. citizens is $160 and the processing time will take about 2 weeks.  If you need the visa faster, there is an option to pay an additional $75 to have the visa processed the same day or within 5 business days for an additional $50.  If you absolutely must have the visa processed in one day, we suggest appearing in person at the embassy or hiring a visa agent to assist with the process.

Other things to consider:

  • Liberians that are now U.S. citizens and traveling to Liberia with their American passport must apply for a visa.
  • Your U.S. passport must be signed; the signature page of your passport is located opposite the data page that has your name and photo.
  • All visitors to Liberia are required to have a valid World Health Organization (WHO) card with yellow fever vaccination.  Please use the following link from the Center for Disease Control website to find the nearest clinic offering the yellow fever vaccine: Search for Stamaril yellow fever vaccination clinics | Travelers' Health | CDC
