How to Apply for a Liberia Visa in Los Angeles

Los Angeles is America’s second most populous city after New York.  Greater Los Angeles—which includes Los Angeles County, San Bernardino County, Riverside County, Ventura County, and Orange County—has a population of nearly 19 million people.  If Greater Los Angeles were its own country, it would be the 15th largest economy in the world (its GDP is more than twice the size of the combined economies of Nigeria and Liberia).  Known for its endless sprawl (and endless freeways), Greater Los Angeles is the largest metropolitan region in the United States by land area and includes over 200 cities such as Santa Monica, Pasadena, Malibu, Beverly Hills, Culver City, Burbank, Long Beach, Inglewood, Irvine, Anaheim, Oxnard, and Huntington Beach.  Los Angeles is well known for its huge immigrant population and attracts people from all over the world.  Although the African immigrant community in Los Angeles is much smaller than other groups from Asia and Latin America, there is still a sizable population of West Africans throughout Southern California.  The immigrant population of Liberians in Greater Los Angeles is estimated to be around 2,000 residents.

Liberia is a West African country of over 5 million people that is a quarter the size of California by land area.  Visitors to Liberia fly into Roberts International Airport, which has a modern passenger terminal and will soon have a new cargo terminal that will support the country’s ability to export high-value, perishable agricultural products to international markets.  Liberia’s economy relies on the exportation of minerals and agricultural commodities through its seaports of Monrovia (the country’s capital) and Buchanan.  Overseas remittances from the one million Liberians living abroad in cities like Los Angeles are also an important source of hard currency.  Doing business in Liberia is not easy, but the country has lots of potential across multiple sectors of its economy, particularly in agriculture and tourism.  As a testament to the growing list of opportunities in Liberia, Pinkberry—the frozen yogurt brand that started in Los Angeles—recently opened a new store in Monrovia thanks to the efforts of a local entrepreneur.  Liberia is gaining in popularity as a tourist destination for heritage tours as more Americans want to understand their ancestral culture and history.  Americans also enjoy Liberia’s beach resorts such as Libassa Ecolodge and others along the Atlantic coast.

Obtaining a Liberian Visa from Los Angeles

Visas for Liberia are issued by the Liberian government in the United States.  The Liberian government is represented by three consulates in New York City, Atlanta, and Minneapolis, along with one embassy located in Washington, D.C.  To apply for a Liberian visa from Los Angeles, you can appear in person at the embassy or you can send the required application documents by US Mail, FedEx, or UPS to this address:

Embassy of the Republic of Liberia
5201 16th Street N.W.
Washington, D.C. 20011

It is important to review the requirements for visas on the Liberian embassy website and ensure your application and all supporting documents are accurate.  Here is the link to the embassy website with detailed information:  Embassy of Liberia - Consular Services (liberianembassyus.org).  You will also bring a self-addressed USPS (US Postal Service Express Mail or Priority Mail), FedEx, or UPS self-addressed prepaid envelope (please make note of the tracking number) along with a money order made payable to “Embassy of Liberia” to pay the visa fee.  The visa fee for U.S. citizens is $160 and the processing time will take about 2 weeks.  If you need the visa faster, there is an option to pay an additional $75 to have the visa processed the same day or within 5 business days for an additional $50.  If you absolutely must have the visa processed in one day, we suggest appearing in person at the embassy or hiring a visa agent to assist with the process.

Other things to consider:

  • Liberians that are now U.S. citizens and traveling to Liberia with their American passport must apply for a visa.
  • Your U.S. passport must be signed; the signature page of your passport is located opposite the data page that has your name and photo.
  • All visitors to Liberia are required to have a valid World Health Organization (WHO) card with yellow fever vaccination.  Please use the following link from the Center for Disease Control website to find the nearest clinic offering the yellow fever vaccine: Search for Stamaril yellow fever vaccination clinics | Travelers' Health | CDC
