How to Apply for an Ivory Coast Visa in Atlanta

How to Apply for an Ivory Coast Visa in Atlanta

The Ivory Coast -- officially the Republic of Côte d'Ivoire -- may not be as well known to residents of Atlanta as other English-speaking countries in Africa, but the small West African nation is enjoying increasing tourism alongside strong economic growth.

“Côte d'Ivoire is a stunner, shingled with starfish-studded sands, palm-tree forests, and roads so orange they resemble strips of bronzing powder,” Lonely Planet stated. “This is a true tropical paradise, and a country that is moving towards economic progress – it's a nation that is modernizing its lifestyle and culture, but managing to do so without losing its identity.” (https://www.lonelyplanet.com/destinations/cote-divoire)

The country of 32.6 million borders Burkina Faso, Ghana, Guinea, Liberia, and Mali, as well as the Gulf of Guinea on the Atlantic Ocean.  It covers some 125,000 square miles, almost two-thirds of which is agricultural land.  The most biodiverse country in West Africa, Côte d'Ivoire spans coastal beaches, lowland forests, savannahs, and mangroves.  Côte d'Ivoire is an ethnically and religiously diverse country.  While French is the official language, almost 80 languages are spoken here.

The area had been the seat of the Kong Empire and several other states for centuries.  Fifteenth Century Portuguese explorers christened the area “the Ivory Coast” due to its strong ivory trade.  The region became a protectorate of France in 1843, a French colony in 1893, and an independent nation in 1960.  Despite a 1999 coup d'état and two civil wars in the early 2000s, Ivory Coast has become a relatively stable nation by regional standards.  Still, the U.S. State Department advises travelers to “exercise increased caution due to crime, terrorism, civil unrest, health, and piracy.” (https://travel.state.gov/content/travel/en/international-travel/International-Travel-Country-Information-Pages/CotedIvoire.html)

Ivory Coast also enjoys the fastest-growing economy in West Africa and the largest economy in the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), contributing 40% of the 15-member economic union’s GDP.  The International Monetary Fund estimates the republic’s annual GDP growth for both 2024 and 2025 at 6.5%.  Côte d'Ivoire is best known as the world’s largest producer of cocoa, producing more than two million tons annually, plus a top coffee, palm oil, and rubber producer. “It is the world’s top exporter of cocoa and raw cashew nuts, and the fourth-largest exporter of goods in sub-Saharan Africa,” Intro Africa noted, “and has a significant manufacturing sector.” (https://intro.africa/story/experience-abijan-ivory-coast/)

The country offers “substantial multi-sectoral investment opportunities” for American businesses, the U.S. State Department stated recently. “Côte d’Ivoire has positioned itself as the historical economic engine in francophone West Africa, particularly in {the} agricultural, financial, and digital sectors.” (https://www.state.gov/reports/2024-investment-climate-statements/cote-divoire)  New offshore petroleum and gas discoveries will soon boost the nation’s energy production.  A new five-year economic plan “directs the government to implement policies to transform the economy away from a commodity export focus to increase value-added processing contributions to GDP and job creation, particularly for youth and women,” the State Department continued. “These efforts offer opportunities for U.S. technology companies to expand and export American equipment and capacity building into the Ivoirian market.” Continuing infrastructure development and population growth also provide opportunities for Atlanta-based companies and entrepreneurs dealing in IT services, construction, healthcare, transportation, telecommunications, and many other sectors.

Tourism is another industry with numerous opportunities for Atlanta area businesspeople.  The government is boosting hotel, resort, and infrastructure development to position Ivory Coast as a regional tourist destination -- highlighted when it hosted the Africa Cup of Nations soccer tournament in 2023.  The country ranks third in Africa for business tourism, and is seeing growth in cultural, luxury, conference, sports, and eco-tourism.

Abidjan, the “Paris of Africa,” is Ivory Coast’s largest city, its most visited destination, and the world’s second-largest French-speaking city.  A vibrant metropolis with modern amenities and cultural treasures, Abidjan is considered one of West Africa’s most developed and livable cities.  The economic hub of the country, Abidjan is known for its European ambiance, wide roads, and active nightlife. “A testament to modernity fused with African charm, the city is characterized by its skyline of gleaming skyscrapers set against the Ébrié Lagoon,” ETIC Journal stated. “In Abidjan, you can experience the lively Treichville market, where the sounds, sights, and scents create a sensory tapestry; or visit the St. Paul’s Cathedral, an architectural marvel.” A top draw for both leisure and business travelers is the Plateau district, the report continued. “The administrative and business quarter is also home to colorful cultural establishments and contemporary art galleries, illustrating the city’s dedication to cultural preservation amidst rapid economic growth.” (https://etichotels.com/journal/10-best-cities-to-visit-in-ivory-coast) While off the normal tourist trail, the Abobo section of Abidjan features bustling markets and delicious street food.

The capital city of Yamoussoukro is Ivory Coast’s fourth-largest city and home to the world’s largest church building, the 323,000-square-foot Basilica of Our Lady of Peace.  Bouaké, the second-largest city, is a hub of commerce and education. “Its vibrant cultural scene is complemented by the annual Bouaké Carnival, which attracts people from all over the world with its colorful parades and lively music,” ETIC Journal noted.  San Pédro, the country’s second-largest port city, is known for such beautiful beaches as Grand Bereby.  Korhogo, the Senufo people’s cultural center, features skilled artisans offering unique textiles and carvings in a city surrounded by countryside filled with sacred forests and traditional villages.  Abengourou, home to the King of the N’zima people, hosts a world-famous Dipri festival each year.  Daloa’s annual Festival of Masks showcases music, dance, crafts, and other cultural traditions.

Ivory Coast is also home to five UNESCO World Heritage sites, including Grand-Bassam, the former French Colonial capital with its elegant colonial architecture, museums, and tree-lined streets – plus arts and crafts markets and pristine tranquil beaches.  Other UNESCO sites are the Mount Nimba Strict Nature Preserve, the Sudanese-style mosques of northern Côte d’Ivoire, and Taï and Comoé national parks. Man, known as “the “City of 18 Mountains,” is known for mountainous landscapes such as the Toura Hills and the picturesque La Cascade waterfall.

“Ivory Coast is a treasure trove of outdoor activities that cater to all kinds of travelers,” according to OffVisa. “From its vibrant beaches and lush rainforests to cultural hikes and thrilling safaris, the country offers a wealth of experiences that showcase its natural beauty and cultural heritage.” (https://offvisa.com/en/news/10-best-outdoor-activities-in-ivory-coast) Ivory Coast has nine national parks that are home for more than 1,200 animal species.  The country offers numerous wildlife safaris, including national park trips where you can see pygmy hippos, primates, elephants, buffaloes, monkeys, and crocodiles.  Visitors from Atlanta can also trek in Taï National Park, one of Africa’s last primary rainforests; hike the waterfalls and mountains near the city of Man; kayak Bandama River; explore the Sacred Forest of Gbepleu, also near Man; or take a cycling tour of coffee and cocoa plantations.  You can enjoy swimming, surfing and jet-skiing at Assinie-Mafia, or simply soak up the sun at its golden beaches and luxury resorts.

Requirements for Obtaining an Ivory Coast Visa

Citizens of the United States and most other countries living in the Atlanta area are required to obtain a visa before visiting Ivory Coast.  Nationals from the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and several other African nations can visit Ivory Coast without a visa for up to 90 days, depending on nationality.  A list of visa-free countries can be found at the Abidjan airport website, https://www.aeroport-abidjan.com/visa_on_arrival_ivory_coast.php or through the government website https://snedai.com/e-visa.

The main requirement to obtain a visa is having a passport valid for at least six months beyond your arrival date with at least one blank page.  All travelers must present proof that they have a current vaccination for yellow fever (typically a World Health Organization “yellow card”).  Additional vaccination recommendations from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control can be found at https://wwwnc.cdc.gov/travel/destinations/traveler/none/ivory-coast?s_cid=ncezid-dgmq-travel-single-001.

There are two options for residents of Atlanta to obtain a visa to visit the Ivory Coast.  The easiest and fastest option is the electronic visa (or e-Visa), where the process is entirely online.  You can also obtain a traditional visa sticker through the republic’s embassy in Washington, D.C.

Obtaining an Ivory Coast e-Visa

Citizens of the United States and most other counties can obtain electronic visas (E-visas) to visit Ivory Coast for tourist, business, and transit purposes.  E-Visas are valid for 90 days after issue, allow multiple entries to the country, and let you to stay in Ivory Coast for up to 30 days.  However, they cannot be extended; if you want to stay longer, you will need to obtain a new visa.  E-Visas are only valid for entry through the Abidjan Port Bouet Airport {also known as Félix-Houphouët-Boigny International Airport}. (NOTE: Citizens of visa-free countries cannot apply for e-Visas, as they can enter Ivory Coast visa-free.)

General requirements for an Ivory Coast tourist visa include:

  • Completed online application, available at https://snedai.com/e-visa.
  • Identification page (i.e., biometrics page) from passport valid for at least 180 days after your departure date with at least one blank page, submitted in JPG format.
  • One passport-style photo.
  • International certificate of immunization for yellow fever.
  • Photocopy of round-trip ticket (JPG format)
  • Invitation letter or accommodation certificate from the place you will stay during your trip, uploaded in JPG format. Invitation letters must be legalized.  Examples can be found at the website above.
  • Health Insurance. Although not required for the visa, we recommend purchasing international medical insurance to cover accidents, injuries, and illnesses while traveling in Ivory Coast.  International medical insurance from GeoBlue can be purchased from Visa Supply online through the following link: Order Now.

You should apply at least 10 days before your trip to be sure the government has plenty of time to process your e-Visa application (and give you time to apply for an embassy-based visa if required).  The process is:

  • Complete the application and upload your supporting documents.
  • Pay your visa and bank service fees, which are currently €73 (about $83 USD). The portal accepts Visa and MasterCard.
  • Receive approval or rejection letter from authorities, typically within 48 hours (although the government says it can take up to five days). If approved, the email notification will include an "Approved Pre-enrollment" document with a barcode.
  • Present the "Approved Pre-enrollment" document to board your plane leaving the U.S.
  • Present your passport and the "Approved Pre-enrollment" document when you arrive at the airport in Abidjan. Biometric enrollment (fingerprints for those more than 12 years old and photographs) will occur, followed by printing of your visa.

Obtaining a Traditional Ivory Coast Visa

Residents of the Atlanta area who are not eligible for the e-Visa or want a type of visa that is not available through the e-Visas process (such as work or study visas, or those for longer visits) can obtain a traditional visa sticker.  Visas are issued by the republic’s U.S. embassy (2424 Massachusetts Avenue, Washington, D.C. 20008; (202) 938-0310).  Contact information, more details, and a link to an application can be found at the embassy website, https://ambaciusa.org/visa-infos.php.

Documents to provide for the visa include:

  • Passport valid for at least six months with at least one blank page.
  • One color picture ID.
  • Legalized invitation letter or hotel booking.
  • Copy of proof of yellow fever vaccine.
  • For non-U.S. citizens, copy of your green card or valid U.S. visa. (NOTE: Visa B1 and B2 are not accepted.)
  • For minor children, a notarized parental consent written by the parent not traveling with the child.
  • For those traveling with a child, a copy of the child’s passport and visa or green card.
  • Copy of visa payment receipt (see below).

To apply for the visa:

  • Download the application form at the embassy site and fill it out completely.
  • Pay your visas fees at https://www.ci-embassyepay.org/. (You’ll need to create an account at this site.) Fees vary by country of origin and length of stay. For example, the fee is $150 for U.S. and Canadian nationals staying up to one year.  Other fees can be found at https://www.ci-embassyepay.org/en/Embassy/Info/2.
  • Upload your application, fee receipt, and documentation to https://www.express54.org/. (You’ll need to register for an account here as well.)

Processing of your application can take from two to 15 days, so apply well ahead of your trip.  Upon approval, the embassy will contact you by email and ask you to send your visa to Washington, D.C. to complete the process.  The embassy will also provide details about providing a self-addressed postage-paid envelope for the return of your visa.
