How to Apply for an Egypt Visa in Los Angeles

Los Angeles is America’s second most populous city after New York.  Greater Los Angeles—which includes Los Angeles County, San Bernardino County, Riverside County, Ventura County, and Orange County—has a population of nearly 19 million people.  If Greater Los Angeles were its own country, it would be the 15th largest economy in the world (its GDP is about three times the GDP of Egypt).  Known for its endless sprawl, Greater Los Angeles is the largest metropolitan region in the United States by land area and includes over 200 cities such as Santa Monica, Pasadena, Beverly Hills, Culver City, Burbank, Long Beach, Carson, Irvine, Anaheim, and Inglewood.  Los Angeles is one of the most multicultural cities on the planet and attracts people from all over the world, including immigrants from the Middle East.  There are an estimated 25,000 Egyptian immigrants in Greater Los Angeles and the state of California has the largest population of Arab Americans in the country.  Los Angeles and Southern California are home to a few nonprofit organizations representing the Egyptian immigrant community and the University of California Los Angeles (UCLA) is one of the few universities in America to offer a graduate program in Egyptology (the study of ancient Egyptian history, religion, art, etc).

Egypt is a Middle Eastern country with over 100 million people located in North Africa and is connected to the southwest corner of Asia by way of the Sinai Peninsula.  95% of Egypt’s population is located along the banks of the Nile River (and Nile Delta), which is the longest river in the world.  Due to its geographical location straddling these two continents, Egypt has always been an important center of civilization, culture, geopolitics, and trade.  About 12% of global trade passes through the Suez Canal, a waterway that connects maritime traffic from Europe to Asia.  Egypt is the center of culture in the Arab World and has a rich tradition of art and media, including music, film, television, and literature.  Egypt has one of the oldest civilizations in the world and is well known for its archaeological sites.  Currently under construction, the Grand Egyptian Museum just outside of Cairo will be a premier tourist attraction for those interested in ancient Egypt.  Although this is a land packed with history and bucket list sites like the Valley of the Kings, Abu Simbel, Karnak Temple, and The Pyramids of Giza and Sphinx, Egypt is also a country where you can relax at a five-star resort in Sharm El Sheikh or enjoy fine dining at one of the numerous upscale restaurants in the Zamalek neighborhood of Cairo.

Obtaining an Egypt Visa from Los Angeles

Visas for Egypt are issued by the Egyptian government in the United States.  The government of Egypt is represented by their embassy located in Washington, D.C. along with four consulates located in New York, Chicago, Houston, and Los Angeles.  Visitors to Egypt can also apply for an electronic visa before their departure, or they can obtain a visa on arrival at Egyptian airports.  If you live in the Los Angeles area and want to get the traditional visa sticker in your passport, you will fill out the visa application and bring your original passport and supporting documents to the consulate (by appointment only—please contact the consulate using their Facebook page) located in the Carthay Circle neighborhood off Wilshire Boulevard, or you can ship them by US Mail or courier service using FedEx or UPS.  Here is their address:

Consulate of the Arab Republic of Egypt
6300 Wilshire Blvd, Ste 1890
Los Angeles, CA 90048

When mailing in your documents to the embassy, you should include a self-addressed USPS (US Postal Service Express Mail or Priority Mail), FedEx, or UPS prepaid envelope so the consulate can return your passport and visa to your home or office.

It is important to review the requirements for visas on the Egypt embassy website and ensure your application and all supporting documents are accurate.  Here is the link to the consulate website with detailed information: VISAS – The Counslate General Of The Arab Republic Of Egypt In Los Angeles (egyconsulatela.com)

Other things to consider:

  • All Americans require a visa to enter Egypt.
  • The consulate only accepts cash or cashier’s checks made payable to the Consulate of Egypt and they do not accept money orders or personal checks.
  • Visas submitted to the consulate can take up to two weeks for processing.
  • As an alternative to the traditional visa sticker issued by the embassy, Americans have the option to apply for the electronic visa using this website: https://www.visa2egypt.gov.eg/
  • It is recommended to purchase travel insurance before any international trip in case of medical emergencies.  We advise getting the Geo Blue Voyager Single Trip Plan.
