How to Apply for a United Kingdom Visa in Savannah
The United Kingdom remains one of the world’s top 10 tourist destinations, with visitors from American cities such as Savannah providing the largest number of visitors to the UK. U.S. citizens only need a passport and an electronic travel authorization (ETA) to enter Britain. However, many foreigners living in the United States may need to obtain a visa to visit the British Isles.
“Great Britain packs so much greatness into its pint-sized shores: crumbling castles, soaring cathedrals, quaint villages, timeless landscapes, and history galore,” Lonely Planet reported. “The story of England stretches back more than 5,000 years, which means it’s impossible to escape the past here. As you wander historic urban centers, mysterious monoliths, misty landscapes, rugged coastlines and national parks, you’ll discover a country filled with unparalleled places to visit.”(https://www.lonelyplanet.com/articles/best-places-to-visit-in-england)
Officially known as the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, the UK encompasses more than 240,000 square kilometers, 12,700 miles of coastline, and almost 70 million people. Britain is surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean, the English Channel, the North Sea, the Irish Sea, and the Celtic Sea. Four countries make up the UK–England, Scotland, and Wales (collectively, the island of Great Britain) plus Northern Ireland–and numerous other small islands that complete the British Isles. The UK’s only land border is with the Republic of Ireland, an independent country which covers most of the island of Ireland.
England, which accounts for more than half the UK’s acreage, is largely characterized by lowland terrain, with some mountainous areas to the north. Scotland, the most mountainous country in the UK, also includes some 900 islands. Wales is also primarily mountains, while Ireland is known for rolling emerald hills. Trains, ferries, and highways provide numerous transportation options within and between these countries. They all feature rugged ocean coastlines, busy shipping ports, legendary historic sites, and pastoral countryside villages.
The British Isles have been continuously inhabited more than 11,000 years. The Roman Empire conquered Britain in 43 AD and ruled Southern Britain for 400 years. The Romans were followed by Germanic Anglo-Saxon settlers who expanded across much of present-day Britain. In 1066, William the Conqueror from Normandy seized most of England and Wales. Over subsequent centuries, the network of kingdoms in Britain fought several inter-country wars and internal civil wars. Those conflicts sparked the rise of a democratic system that curtailed monarch’s powers, leading to establishing the present United Kingdom in 1927. The UK was also the world’s most powerful country during the 19th and early 20th Century as the British Empire spanned the globe. However, the two World Wars and the subsequent loss of most of its colonies diminished its influence.
The world’s first industrialized country, Great Britain enjoys the sixth-largest economy is the world and second-largest in Europe, with a GDP approaching $4 trillion. The United States is the UK’s largest single-nation trading partner, while the United Kingdom is the top recipient of U.S. foreign direct investment. “The U.S.-UK investment relationship is the largest in the world,” the U.S. International Trade Administration (ITA) reported (https://www.trade.gov/knowledge-product/united-kingdom-market-overview). “Major categories of U.S. exports include financial and professional services, industrial supplies, agricultural products, cyber security and other IT, medical equipment, consumer goods, smart grids, and travel and tourism.” The UK offers commercial opportunities for Savannah-based companies in such sectors as aerospace and defense, IT services, health and pharmaceutical, consulting services, and travel.
Tourism accounted for 10% of the United Kingdom’s GDP and totaled 286 billion British pounds (U.S. $377 billion in 2024, according to Visit Britain and the British government. The UK reported a record 41.2 million inbound visits that year. The United States provided the largest number with more than three million visits, followed by France at 1.5 million, followed by Germany and Ireland. (https://commonslibrary.parliament.uk/research-briefings/sn06022/) Visit Britain estimates 2025 inbound tourism at 44.3 million visitors who spent GBP 34.6 billion ($45.5 billion) during the year. (https://www.visitbritain.org/research-insights/inbound-tourism-forecast) London was the most visited city, followed by Edinburgh (Scotland), Manchester, Birmingham, and Liverpool. The British Museum in London is the UK’s most visited attraction.
London, the capital of both England and the UK, is a global financial hub and will likely be the entry point for most visitors from Savannah. The city is known for cultural treasures including prominent museums and art galleries; the changing of the guard at Buckingham Place; London Bridge and the Tower of London; and panoramic views from the London Eye (aka Millennium Wheel), a cantilevered observation wheel on the River Thames. Edinburgh, the capital of Scotland, is the second most visited city in the UK, where towering castles and bustling nightlife echo its traditional Scottish heritage. Manchester in northwestern England boasts a rich industrial heritage, while the key port of Liverpool is best known as the birthplace of the Beatles. Other popular tourist draws for Savannah-based visitors are the university hubs of Oxford and Cambridge; the tall ships and Victorian and art nouveau architecture of Glasgow; William Shakespeare’s birthplace at Stratford-on-Avon; and Dublin, the home of Guinness Beer and the former prison at Kilmainham Gaol. The United Kingdom and its Overseas Territories have 35 UNESCO World Heritage Sites, ranging from palaces, cathedrals and the Tower of London in England to ancient Welsh castles and medieval Scottish fortresses.
Away from its major cities, the United Kingdom draws hikers, bicyclists, and kayakers to its pastoral farmlands, quaint rustic villages, traditional gardens, national parks, and seaside resorts. England’s highlights include the Neolithic megaliths of Stonehenge, the Roman baths of the city of Bath, London’s historic Canterbury Cathedral, and picturesque Lake District National Park. Scotland’s rugged mountains are interspersed with dark highland lakes such as Loch Lomond and Loch Ness, home of the legendary monster. Its famous attractions include Edinburgh Castle, the Royal and Ancient Golf Club at St. Andrews, and the Culloden Battlefield and Visitors Centre, site of the last battle for Scotland’s independence from England. Cardiff Castle is the best known of Wales’ many castles, while the picture-postcard beauty of the riverside villages of Beddgelert and Betws-y-Coed seem frozen in time.
British Travel Requirements for Foreign Visitors
Citizens of the United States and certain other countries living in the Savannah area are not required to obtain a visa before entering United Kingdom. However, U.S. citizens and those from other visa-free countries need to have a valid passport and obtain an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA), as described in the next section. People holding passports from countries that are not part of the ETA program will need to obtain an electronic visa (e-Visa) or traditional paper visa.
Do you need an ETA or a visa? “You usually need an ETA rather than a visa if you’re from Europe, the USA, Australia, Canada, or certain other countries,” the UK government stated. The ETA allows you to travel to the UK for certain reasons, such as tourism or family visits; longer trips and those for other purposes generally require a visa. You can check whether you need a visa or ETA at https://www.gov.uk/check-uk-visa. Just enter your nationality and details about the type of trip you are planning, and then follow the links to apply for an ETA or visa.
Requirements for Obtaining a UK ETA
Travelers from the Savannah area who are exempt from normal visa requirements still need to obtain an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA). Introduced in early 2025, the ETA costs GBP 16 (about $21). It is good for up to two years after it is issued or until your passport expires. The ETA allows you to travel to the UK for tourism, family visits, business meetings, conferences, short-term study lasting less than six months, or certain other reasons. You can stay for up to six months and make multiple trips to the UK while the ETA remains in force.
You do not need an ETA if you are required to obtain a British visa, transiting through a UK airport, or for certain other reasons. Exceptions are listed at https://www.gov.uk/eta/when-not-need-eta.
You can apply for an ETA online at the government website (https://www.gov.uk/eta/apply) or by using the UK ETA mobile app. (The site above has links to the Apple and Android app stores). To apply for an ETA, you will need:
- A scanned color copy of your passport’s information page in JPEG format. Also, your passport must be valid for up to six months beyond the date you enter the UK.
- A digital passport-style photo.
- A completed ETA application, also available through the website above. The application includes personal information and details about your trip.
- A valid email address.
- Method of online payment for the ETA fee: credit card, debit card, Apple Pay, or Google Pay.
Apply for your ETA several days before your departure date. “You’ll get a decision by email from UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI), usually within a day,” UKVI stated. “The email will contain your 16 digit ETA reference number. Contact UKVI if you haven’t had a decision after 3 working days.”
If your application is approved, your ETA will be automatically linked to your passport. When you arrive in the UK, you will only need to present your passport.
Although not officially required for entry into the United Kingdom, we recommend purchasing international medical insurance to cover accidents, injuries, and illnesses during your trip. Obtaining a Standard Visa or E-Visa
The UK is in the process of transitioning from traditional paper visas to electronic visas (e-Visa). The government noted that most applicants will receive an e-Visa, but some will still get a traditional visa sticker. {For example, the e-Visa for a standard visitor visa became available in November 2025.} Until this transition is completed, whether you can get an e-Visa depends largely on the type of visit, your country of origin, and other details. In either case, the process begins with an online application submitted through the government website or via its immigration mobile app.
There are several visa types available to U.S. citizens and residents, including visitor, work, study, and other reasons. The complete list, including links to requirements, costs, and applications, can be found at https://www.gov.uk/browse/visas-immigration.
For example, you can stay in the UK for up to six months for tourism, business, and other short stays by obtaining a standard visitor visa, which allows one or more multiple entries to Great Britain. A long-term standard visitor visa is also available for terms lasting two, five or 10 years, with each trip lasting up to six months. The earliest you can apply for the visitor visa is three months before your departure date.
The steps for a visitor visa are outlined at https://www.gov.uk/standard-visitor. The basic process is:
- Fill out the online application at the link found https://www.gov.uk/standard-visitor/apply-standard-visitor-visa.
- Pay the visa fee online (credit and debit card, Apple Pay or Google Pay).
- Book a biometric appointment at an Application Support Centre (ASC), if needed.
The primary requirement for obtaining a standard visitor visa is having a valid passport. The passport must be valid for at least the duration of your stay and contain at least one blank page. During the online application process, you will need to provide such details as:
- Passport number
- Travel dates
- Where you will be staying
- Estimated cost of your trip
- Current home address and how long you have lived there
- Parents’ names and dates of birth (if known)
- Annual income (if applicable)
- Details of previous criminal, civil, or immigration offenses
You may also be asked for other information, such your travel history over the past 10 years; employer contact information; and the names, addresses, and passport numbers of your partner and/or any family members in the UK. If you are applying to stay in the UK for more than six months, you may also have to provide certification you have passed a tuberculosis test and pay a healthcare surcharge for access to the National Health Service (NHS).
Application fees vary by a number of factors, such as the country issuing your passport, type of visit, and length of stay. For example, for U.S. visitors, the fee for the short-term visitor visa is $174, while long-term visas vary from $650 for two years to $1,450 for 10 years. A list of fees for U.S. travelers can be found at https://visa-fees.homeoffice.gov.uk/y/usa/usd/visit/all. Fees for other travelers are shown on the government website.
After you complete the first two steps, you may be asked to book your biometric appointment. (If the UK government already has your biometric data on file, you can bypass this step.) Locations in the United States and other countries are listed at https://visa.vfsglobal.com/usa/en/gbr/attend-centre. (For example, residents of Savannah are served by VFS Global Services’ UK Visa Application Centre at VFS Services (USA) Inc., 100 Peachtree Street NW, Floor 2nd Suite 225, Atlanta GA 30303.)
At your appointment, you must:
- Prove your identity with your passport or similar travel document.
- Have your fingerprints and a photo (i.e., biometric information) taken.
- Provide the required documents that show you’re eligible for a Standard Visitor visa.
Once you’ve applied online, proved your identity, and provided your documents, you will usually receive the Home Office’s decision on your visa within three weeks by email. (You can also pay extra to expedite the decision for certain visas and receive an answer within five days at https://www.gov.uk/faster-decision-visa-settlement.) The Home Office will also explain what you need to do next to receive your e-Visa electronically or a traditional physical sticker (or vignette) to add to your passport.
To access your e-Visa, you will need a UKVI account. You will need your passport number and current visa application number to set up an account. Instructions for creating the account can be found at https://www.gov.uk/evisa/set-up-ukvi-account.
