How to Apply for a Zambia Visa in Washington D.C.
Washington, D.C. is the capital of the United States and is an important global city that attracts visitors from all over the world. The Washington, D.C. Metropolitan Area—which includes the District of Columbia and parts of Virginia, Maryland, and West Virginia—is America’s sixth-largest metropolis and has a population of 6.3 million people. Cities within this area (apart from the District of Columbia) include Alexandria, Annandale, Arlington, Fairfax, Falls Church, and Reston—all in Virginia—along with the Maryland towns of Bethesda, College Park, Frederick, Gaithersburg, Rockville, and Silver Spring. The Washington, D.C. Metropolitan Area has a large population of immigrants from Africa, including a few hundred from Zambia. Although their population is not huge, it is large enough to host community events and organize a nonprofit group representing the interest of Zambian people in the area (Association of Zambians in D.C., Maryland & Virginia). As our nation’s capital, Washington, D.C. is home to federal agencies like USAID and Peace Corps that have programs in Zambia to help bolster the country’s healthcare, education, and agriculture infrastructure. There are also dozens of nonprofit groups throughout the Washington, D.C. Metropolitan Area doing work in Zambia.
Zambia is a country located in southern African that is over five times the combined size of Virginia and Maryland by land area but only has a population of 18.3 million residents (compared to Virginia and Maryland’s combined population of 14.5 million). Although there are dozens of tribal languages spoken throughout Zambia, English is the official language due to the country's former days as a British protectorate. Lusaka is the nation’s capital and is also the commercial center of the country. Most visitors from Washington, D.C. traveling to Zambia will arrive at Kenneth Kaunda International Airport, located 16 miles from Lusaka’s business district. Lusaka has plenty of quality restaurants and international hotel chains to make visitors feel comfortable. Just three hours away from Lusaka is the town of Siavonga and Lake Kariba, which is a great destination to relax and enjoy the scenery. Zambia has some of Africa’s best wildlife preserves and national parks such as North Luanga, South Luanga, Kafue, Liuwa, and the Lower Zambezi National Park. Of course, no visit to Zambia is complete without a stop in the town of Livingston and nearby Victoria Falls, which is the largest waterfall in the world and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Mosi-oa-Tunya is the national park that protects this natural wonder.
