How to Apply for a Zambia Visa in Philadelphia
Philadelphia is the largest city in the state of Pennsylvania and is one of the oldest cities in the United States. Founded in 1682 by Englishman William Penn, a social reformer and champion of liberty, he named the city Philadelphia using the Greek term meaning “brotherly love”. Philadelphia has the nickname “City of Brotherly Love” and is nowadays more casually known by locals and non-locals alike as “Philly”. The Philadelphia metropolitan area has over 6 million people and includes cities and towns in the states of New Jersey, Delaware, and Maryland, in addition to Pennsylvania. The area is well known as a center of higher education and has more than 80 postsecondary institutions including the University of Pennsylvania, Temple, Drexel, Villanova, and Thomas Jefferson University. Philadelphia does not have a particularly large population of Zambian immigrants, however, the city does have connections to Zambia through its hospitals, universities, charitable organizations and church groups that make trips to the country. University of Pennsylvania’s Penn Language Center is one of the few schools in the United States to teach Nyanja, a language spoken in Zambia. Philadelphia is also home to professional golfer Vincent Kabaso, the first Zambian PGA member.
Zambia is a landlocked country located in southern African that is well over six times the size of Pennsylvania and bordered by eight other African nations. Although there are dozens of tribal languages spoken throughout Zambia, English is the official language due to the country's former days as a British protectorate. Lusaka is the nation’s capital and is also the commercial center of the country. Most visitors from Philadelphia traveling to Zambia will arrive at Kenneth Kaunda International Airport, located 16 miles from Lusaka’s business district. Lusaka has plenty of quality restaurants and international hotel chains to make visitors feel comfortable. Just three hours away from Lusaka is the town of Siavonga and Lake Kariba, a good place to relax and enjoy the scenery. Zambia has some of Africa’s best wildlife preserves and national parks such as North Luanga, South Luanga, Kafue, Liuwa, and the Lower Zambezi National Park. Of course, no visit to Zambia is complete without a stop in the town of Livingston and nearby Victoria Falls, which is the largest waterfall in the world and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Mosi-oa-Tunya is the national park that protects this natural wonder. On the opposite side of the country sits Lake Tanganyika, the world’s longest freshwater lake with over 350 species of fish.
