How to Apply for a Nigeria Visa in Portland

Portland is the most populous city in the state of Oregon and the second-most populous city in the Pacific Northwest after Seattle.  The Portland metropolitan area has a population of 2.5 million people and is the 25th most-populous metropolis in the United States.  The city is located on the Columbia and Willamette Rivers, which meet on the northern end of the Willamette Valley.  The valley stretches for 150 miles between forested mountains containing lush farmland and scenic views.  Over 250 agricultural items are produced here, including award-winning wines and craft beer (made from locally grown hops).  Portland’s Nigerian immigrant population is small, but just like in other American cities, Nigerians here are typically well-educated professionals working in health care and academia, or they are engaged in entrepreneurial endeavors.  There are also Nigerian students attending the area’s colleges and universities.

Nigeria is a large African country located on the Gulf of Guinea that is 3 ½-times the size of Oregon.  Nigeria is the most populous country in Africa and seventh most-populous in the world.  Known as the “Giant of Africa”, Nigeria has the largest economy in Africa and hosts many American companies like General Electric, Procter & Gamble, Kimberly-Clark, Coca-Cola, and others.  Nike—the famous Portland area footwear and apparel company—has gained popularity in Nigeria with their “Naija” collection of soccer jerseys and athletic gear. As the Nigerian economy develops, local brands like Africa for Africa (AFA) Sports are developing their own lines of athletic wear, and manufacturing locally within Nigeria.  Igbo, Yoruba, and Hausa are some of Nigeria’s most widely spoken native languages, but English is the nation’s official language.  Abuja is Nigeria’s political capital, while Lagos is its economic and cultural capital.

Obtaining a Nigerian Visa from Portland

Nigerian visas are issued by the Nigerian government in the United States.  The Nigerian government is represented by two consulates (there is one located in Atlanta and the other is in New York City) and one embassy, located in Washington, D.C.  To apply for a Nigerian visa from Portland, you must contact OIS Services (the contractor for the Nigerian government) and appear in person at one of their offices.  The closest OIS office from Portland is in Los Angeles, but there are also OIS offices in Atlanta, Houston, New York City, and Washington, D.C.  Please check the website of OIS for more details about the location of their offices and contact information:  https://oisservices.com/

It is a good idea to review the requirements for the visa on the Nigerian consulate website.  Here is the link to the consulate website in Atlanta: https://nigeria-consulate-atl.org/visas/.  As mentioned on the consulate website, you will apply for the visa online here: https://portal.immigration.gov.ng/.  You will make payment to the Nigerian Immigration Service through Innovate 1 Services using that same website.  You will then gather all the necessary documents for the type of visa you are applying for (tourist, business, etc.) and appear in person at the OIS Services office in either Atlanta, Houston, Los Angeles, New York, or Washington D.C.
