How to Apply for a Nigeria Visa in New York

New York is America’s most prominent city and some proud New Yorkers may consider it the “Capital of the World”.  Certainly a case can be made for this title since the city is the headquarters of the United Nations; it is one of the most important economic regions in the world; it has the highest number of billionaires of any city in the world; it is the most linguistically diverse city in the world; its metropolitan region has the largest foreign-born population; it is one of the most preeminent cities in the world for arts and culture; it has some of the best restaurants in the world and without a doubt, has the best pizza!  Having one of the largest Nigerian immigrant populations in America of around 40,000 residents, it is no surprise that New York also has plenty of excellent Nigerian restaurants offering bold and flavorful foods.  New York’s JFK airport is one of two airports in the country with direct flights to Nigeria.

Nigeria is an African country located on the Gulf of Guinea that is over six times the size of New York state.  Nigeria is the most populous country in Africa and seventh most-populous in the world.  Lagos, the country’s largest city and commercial capital, has a population that is almost twice the size of New York.  Nigeria is a youthful country where nearly half of its citizens are below the age of 30.  It is estimated that Nigeria will surpass the United States in population and become the third most-populous country in the world by 2050.   Known as the “Giant of Africa”, Nigeria has the largest economy in Africa and is well known for its huge oil and gas sector, but less well known is its growing manufacturing sector that is exporting products across the continent.  Nigeria is home to Dangote, an industrial conglomerate whose owner is the richest man in Africa.  The company plans to establish an office in New York City this year.

Obtaining a Nigerian Visa from New York

Nigerian visas are issued by the Nigerian government in the United States.  The Nigerian government is represented by two consulates (there is one located in New York City and the other is in Atlanta) and one embassy, located in Washington, D.C.  To apply for a Nigerian visa from New York, you must contact OIS Services (the contractor for the Nigerian government) and appear in person at their office in Manhattan.  Please check the website of OIS for more details about the location of their office and contact information:  https://oisservices.com/

It is a good idea to review the requirements for the visa on the Nigerian consulate website.  Here is the link to the consulate website in Atlanta: https://nigeria-consulate-atl.org/visas/.  As mentioned on the consulate website, you will apply for the visa online here: https://portal.immigration.gov.ng/.  You will make payment to the Nigerian Immigration Service through Innovate 1 Services using that same website.  You will then gather all the necessary documents for the type of visa you are applying for (tourist, business, etc.) and appear in person at the OIS Services office in New York.
