How to Apply for a Nigeria Visa in Denver

Denver, known as the “Mile High City” because of its elevation of 5,280 feet, is the capital of Colorado and is one of the fastest growing cities in America.  The Denver metropolitan area is the 19th most-populous metro area in the U.S. and has a population approaching 3 million people.  The region’s growing and diverse economy—along with its proximity to Rocky Mountain ski resorts—make Denver an attractive destination for people seeking a more active and balanced lifestyle.  The Denver metropolitan area includes the towns of Arvada, Aurora, Castle Rock, Centennial, Lakewood, Littleton, Thornton, and Westminster.  While the Nigerian immigrant population in Denver is small compared with other American cities, it is still large enough to host annual community events such as “Nigeria Day”, and Nigerian restaurants and foods trucks are emerging on the city’s culinary scene.

Nigeria is an African country located on the Gulf of Guinea that is roughly 3 ½ times the size of Colorado.  Nigeria is the most populous country in Africa and seventh most-populous in the world (it is estimated that Nigeria will be the third most-populous country in the world by 2050).  Just like Colorado, Nigeria is blessed (or cursed, depending on one’s point of view) with an abundance of oil and gas resources.  Colorado and Nigeria both have active gold mines, and the country plans to commence the exportation of gold in 2021.  Lagos (the economic and cultural capital of Nigeria) is emerging as a hub for young software engineers much like Denver continues to grow as a center for information technology.  The Denver metropolitan area (and the nearby city of Boulder) is also a center for food industry entrepreneurs, and Lagos has many food-related companies and start-up businesses making products for export throughout Africa.

Obtaining a Nigerian Visa from Denver

Nigerian visas are issued by the Nigerian government in the United States.  The Nigerian government is represented by two consulates (there is one located in Atlanta and the other is in New York City) and one embassy, located in Washington, D.C.  To apply for a Nigerian visa from Denver, you must contact OIS Services (the contractor for the Nigerian government) and appear in person at one of their offices.  The closest OIS office is located in Los Angeles and Houston (which are both about 1,025 miles from Denver) along with OIS offices in Atlanta, New York City, and Washington, D.C.  Please check the website of OIS for more details about their contact information and give them a call to ensure their office is open:  https://oisservices.com/

It is a good idea to review the requirements for the visa on the Nigerian consulate website.  Here is the link to the consulate website in Atlanta: https://nigeria-consulate-atl.org/visas/.  As mentioned on the consulate website, you will apply for the visa online here: https://portal.immigration.gov.ng/.  You will make payment to the Nigerian Immigration Service through Innovate 1 Services using that same website.  You will then gather all the necessary documents for the type of visa you are applying for (tourist, business, etc.) and appear in person at the OIS Services office in Los Angeles or Houston (or Atlanta, New York City, or Washington D.C.).
