How to Apply for a Liberia Visa in Detroit

Detroit is the second-largest city in the Midwest (after Chicago) and is better known by its nickname “Motor City”, or “Motown”, because of its prominence as the global center of the automotive industry.  Although the city has certainly had its share of ups and downs, Detroit remains an important and influential American city.  The Detroit metropolitan area, known as Metro Detroit, has a population of 4.3 million and is the fourteenth-largest metropolis in the United States.  Metro Detroit includes the towns of Dearborn, Royal Oak, Auburn Hills, Troy, Livonia, Southfield, Rochester Hills, Warren, Pontiac, Sterling Heights, and other municipalities.  There are an estimated 500 Liberian immigrants living in Metro Detroit and a few hundred more living in Western Michigan.  Detroit is home to the Liberian Association of Michigan, which promotes the cultural heritage of Liberia and provides cultural assimilation services for newly arrived immigrants.  Although the community is not huge, Liberians are making a positive impact in the state of Michigan working as engineers, teachers, health care workers, and small business owners.  There is also no shortage of native-born Michiganders volunteering their time and money to improve the lives of people in Liberia.

Liberia is the first and oldest modern republic in Africa, but in terms of demographics, this is a youthful nation—63% of its population is less than 25 years old.  Liberia is a lush, tropical country with limitless natural beauty that borders Sierra Leone, Guinea, Ivory Coast, and the Atlantic Ocean.  Visitors to Liberia fly into Roberts International Airport, which has a newly constructed passenger terminal and will soon have a new cargo terminal.  From the airport, it is about a $20 taxi ride to downtown Monrovia—Liberia’s capital and most-populous city.  Liberia’s economy relies on the exportation of minerals and agricultural commodities through the seaports of Monrovia and Buchanan, along with remittances from Liberians living abroad in U.S. cities like Detroit.  Although doing business in Liberia is not easy, there are opportunities here across multiple sectors of the economy.  Detroit investors and entrepreneurs with experience in industrial assembly and manufacturing can make a positive impact on the Liberian economy.  Liberia is gaining in popularity as a tourist destination for heritage tours as more Americans want to understand their ancestral culture and history.  It is also a country where visitors can enjoy the beauty and tranquility of its beach resorts.

Obtaining a Liberian Visa from Detroit

Visas for Liberia are issued by the Liberian government in the United States.  The Liberian government is represented by three consulates in New York City, Atlanta, and Minneapolis, along with one embassy located in Washington, D.C.  To apply for a Liberian visa from Detroit, you can appear in person at the embassy or you can send the required application documents by US Mail, FedEx, or UPS to this address:

Embassy of the Republic of Liberia
5201 16th Street N.W.
Washington, D.C. 20011

It is important to review the requirements for visas on the Liberian embassy website and ensure your application and all supporting documents are accurate.  Here is the link to the embassy website with detailed information:  Embassy of Liberia - Consular Services (liberianembassyus.org).  You will also bring a self-addressed USPS (US Postal Service Express Mail or Priority Mail), FedEx, or UPS self-addressed prepaid envelope (please make note of the tracking number) along with a money order made payable to “Embassy of Liberia” to pay the visa fee.  The visa fee for U.S. citizens is $160 and the processing time will take about 2 weeks.  If you need the visa faster, there is an option to pay an additional $75 to have the visa processed the same day or within 5 business days for an additional $50.  If you absolutely must have the visa processed in one day, we suggest appearing in person at the embassy or hiring a visa agent to assist with the process.

Other things to consider:

  • Liberians that are now U.S. citizens and traveling to Liberia with their American passport must apply for a visa.
  • Your U.S. passport must be signed; the signature page of your passport is located opposite the data page that has your name and photo.
  • All visitors to Liberia are required to have a valid World Health Organization (WHO) card with yellow fever vaccination. Please use the following link from the Center for Disease Control website to find the nearest clinic offering the yellow fever vaccine: Search for Stamaril yellow fever vaccination clinics | Travelers' Health | CDC
