How to Apply for a Ghana Visa in Detroit
Detroit is the largest city in the state of Michigan and the second largest metropolitan area in the Midwest (after Chicago). Detroit is better known by its nickname “Motor City”, or “Motown”, because of its prominence as the global center of the automotive industry. Although the city has certainly had its share of ups and downs, Detroit remains an important and influential American city. Detroit is also a hub of Black American culture and heritage and has several attractions and historical sites such as Second Baptist Church and the Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History. The Detroit metropolitan area, known as Metro Detroit, has a population of 4.3 million and is the fourteenth-largest metropolis in the United States. Metro Detroit includes the towns of Dearborn, Royal Oak, Auburn Hills, Livonia, Southfield, Rochester Hills, Warren, Pontiac, Sterling Heights, and other municipalities. There are nearly 40,000 African-born immigrants throughout Metro Detroit, including immigrants from Ghana who are bringing new life and energy to the city. The state of Michigan has strong ties to Ghana through its academic institutions such as University of Michigan, whose medical school faculty have provided training to Ghanaian doctors.
Ghana is a West African country about the same size as Michigan by land area and is located along the Atlantic Ocean and Gulf of Guinea. This nation of 31 million people has a proud history and rich culture that is one of the most influential in Africa. Led by Kwame Nkrumah, Ghana’s first president and icon of the Pan-Africanism Movement, this was the first country in Sub-Saharan Africa to gain independence during the era of European colonialism. The ideals of the Pan-Africanism Movement are manifested today by the growing number of American tourists traveling to Ghana from U.S. cities like Detroit to learn more about their cultural heritage and history while making connections with local Africans. Attractions such as Cape Coast Castle, Osu Castle, Independence Square, and the W.E.B. Du Bois Memorial Centre are good places to start this educational journey, but there are also plenty of ways to experience modern-day Ghana and interact with locals by visiting destinations such as Labadi Beach, Makola Market, or one of the many bars and restaurants along Oxford Street in Accra. Ghana is also a country whose economy is on the rise and their business environment is becoming even more promising now that The Africa Continental Free Trade Agreement (AfCFTA) has recently gone into effect.
