Where to Study English in Seattle?

There are many schools and programs to study English in Seattle.  International students, professionals, and business executives can enhance their English language skills to prepare for education, life, and work in the United States.

Seattle is home to a few public colleges and universities.  These offer a traditional college experience and diverse English programs to prepare you for continued education, test preparation, or career readiness.

  • The University of Washington (UW) (https://www.ielp.uw.edu/) is known as the #1 most innovative public university worldwide, and its English programs are also some of the best nationwide.  Multiple program options include university preparation, business certificates, study abroad, and more.  You can also customize your own program.  UW’s English programs last anywhere from a few weeks to an entire academic year. 
  • Seattle Central College (https://seattlecentral.edu/programs/basic-and-transitional-studies/esl) is one of three unique Seattle College locations.  It’s in the heart of the city and is a great place to study English in Seattle for a well-rounded student experience.  ESL classes help non-native English speakers with different levels of listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills.  Their advanced ESL courses help prepare students for other college-level courses or career readiness. 
  • North Seattle College (https://northseattle.edu/basic-and-transitional-studies/esl) is another Seattle College, located a few miles north of the central campus.  This 2-year public institution offers online and in-person learning opportunities.  With 6 levels of ESL classes, from beginner to college-ready, you can learn English at your level to help you improve your skills for daily life, work, and college.  North Seattle College also has a job training program.
  • South Seattle College (https://southseattle.edu/basic-transitional-studies/english-second-language-esl) is the 3rd of the 3 community Seattle Colleges and the furthest from Seattle’s downtown area.  This might be the best option for students who want to live and attend school in a more affordable part of the city.  ESL students at South Seattle College can choose from beginning, intermediate, and advanced classes – online or hybrid.  These classes help students prepare for college or career readiness.

 

Private College and University English Programs

There are a few private colleges or universities for students to study English in Seattle.  No matter your English goals or whether you want to live in or outside the city, there’s something for everyone.

  • Seattle University (https://www.seattleu.edu/ellc/bridge/) is a small, progressive global Jesuit Catholic university in the city center.  The university’s English Language and Culture Bridge (ELCB) courses help students improve English mastery essential for success in their studies.  Students must already have English language skills, as these are advanced, university-level courses.  After students are accepted into the university, they must meet a Proof of English Proficiency Requirement via testing.
  • Seattle Pacific University (https://spu.edu/current-students/international-students) is a nationally ranked, private Christian liberal arts university and another Seattle school that requires students to have some level of English skills to attend.  Once accepted, Seattle University’s Office of Global Engagement offers support services to help with visa concerns, Curricular Practical Training, Optional Practical Training authorization, and cultural adjustment.
  • If you’re interested in attending college outside the city center, Highline College (https://international.highline.edu/) in Des Moines is a few miles south of Seattle.  Students and faculty at Highline College work together to build a global community, and its International Student Programs partners with Kaplan International Language School to offer various English courses to help you meet your goals.  Students can also live on or off campus.
  • Northwest University (https://www.northwestu.edu/international/center-english-language-education) is also a Christian university close to Seattle in Kirkland, WA, a short drive across Lake Washington.  Its Center for English Language (CELE) offers academic English instruction to help international students become scholars, leaders, and international professionals.  CELE provides opportunities for an Intensive English Program and culture & language short-term programs.

  • ESL for Professionals (https://www.eslforprofessionals.com/) is a Seattle-based online school for professionals interested in improving their English proficiency.  Students can take private classes to meet individual goals or join group courses or a book club.  ESL for Professionals teaches pronunciation, writing, test preparation, conversation fluency, and reading skills.
