Where to Study English in Chicago?

There are many notable colleges, universities, and other schools to study English in Chicago.  Whether you're working towards educational, professional, or personal goals, Chicago's many English programs can help.

  • The University of Illinois Chicago (UIC) (https://tie.uic.edu/) is Chicago’s only public research university.  Students from various backgrounds and of all levels have been learning English to achieve academic, professional, and personal goals at UIC.  The Tutorium allows students to attend an Intensive English Program to prepare for work, life, and an undergraduate or graduate degree at UIC.
  • Chicago State University is one of the area’s most affordable schools and offers opportunities for students to study English in Chicago.  CSU’s online English Language Program (https://www.csu.edu/dosa/diversity/geo/elp/index.htm) serves students of all English levels looking to improve their language skills.  With 4 levels of classes and test preparation courses, ELLs can prepare for university study or professional programs. 
  • ESL students who want to study tech skills while improving their English proficiency can attend the Illinois Institute of Technology, also known as Illinois Tech.  Illinois Tech's English Language Services (https://www.iit.edu/els) support students through various programs and courses to help students refine language and communication skills necessary for success.  Illinois Tech's English Language Assessment tests international student applicants to identify the most beneficial English courses.
  • Northeastern Illinois University is an excellent option for students who want to study English in person or online.  Its School for the Advancement of English Language Learning (SAELL) (https://www.neiu.edu/academics/our-centers-and-programs/english-language-programs) offers two programs – SAELL Intensive English Program, which takes place at the Main Campus in Chicago, and SAELL Anywhere, allowing students to study part-time from anywhere in the world.  All courses focus on reading, writing, speaking, listening, grammar, and vocabulary skills.

 

Private University English Programs

Chicago’s private universities meet you where you are to help you meet specific goals.  There are many programs for studying and practicing English, including group programs, one-on-one classes, and social activities.

  • The University of Chicago is a world-renowned research university.  UChicago's English Language Institute (https://esl.uchicago.edu/) supports ESL students through various programs, including the Academic English Pre-Matriculation Program, English courses, tutors, and extracurricular activities.  UChicago is also a part of the Chicago Language Center and works closely with UChicagoGRAB and the Writing Program to meet all students' needs.
  • Loyola University Chicago is one of the largest Catholic universities in Chicago, and its English Language Learning Program (https://www.luc.edu/esl/steps.shtml) meets students where they are with diverse classes.  Classes range from intermediate to advanced and help students prepare for degree-credit courses or other goals.  Housing options are also available for a traditional college experience.

 

Other English Schools & Programs

If you prefer not to attend a college or university program, there are other English language schools to study English in Chicago.  These reputable programs offer various English learning opportunities and accommodation choices.  There’s also an option for a tuition-free ESL program.

  • The College of Chicago (https://thecollegeofchicago.com/) helps students prepare for further education and assimilate to American culture through ESL and TOEFL programs.  The College of Chicago’s students appreciate small class sizes, comprehensive curriculum, a diverse student body, and accommodation options.
  • Jacquez International Language Academy (https://www.jila-chicago.us/) has several programs, including group classes, one-on-one sessions, and conversation sessions.  Instructors tailor lessons to students' learning styles and needs to help meet individual goals.
  • City Colleges of Chicago (https://www.ccc.edu/menu/Pages/I-am-an-English-Language-Learner.aspx) provides free English classes to non-native English-speaking Illinois residents.  ESL courses help students prepare to live, work, and study in the US.  Classes range from beginner to advanced level and teach basic and life skills, vocational training, and career readiness.
