Public University and College English Programs in Austin

There are a few English programs at public universities or colleges in and near Austin, whether you’re looking for a full-time or part-time program.

• The University of Texas (UT) at Austin’s English Language Center and Texas Global program (https://global.utexas.edu/english-language-center) has many opportunities for students studying English in Austin.  Their full-time Academic English Program is ideal for those seeking a Master’s or Ph.D. at a US University.  The English Language Program is for students preparing for an undergraduate degree.  They also offer self-paced courses for various English skills.  You can also practice your skills and explore the American culture with social events, conversation groups, and other community activities through UT at Austin. 

• Austin Community College District is a public community college with an ESL program (https://adulted.austincc.edu/english-as-a-second-language-esl/) for learners over 16 years old.  Classes help students learn basic and beginning-level English language skills.  After you apply, you’ll take a placement test to start courses at the appropriate level.  Austin Community College’s Adult Education Student Support offers tutoring, disability accommodations, and more.  Because classes are limited, there’s often a waitlist.

Private University English Programs Near Austin

While there aren’t many options to study English in Austin at a private university, there are a few.

• The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor (UMHB) is a Christian college that offers ESOL courses (https://www.umhb.edu/humanities-sciences/esol/home) to prepare you for a successful transition into academic courses.  UMHB is in Belton, Texas and is less than a one-hour drive from Austin.  Belton offers small-town charm while still being a short drive to Austin.  As a Christian university, UMHB’s ESOL classes foster faith-based leadership and service.  With three levels of courses, you’ll learn the necessary skills for verbal and written English communication as you prepare to attend UMHB’s college courses.
