How to Apply for an Italy Visa in Jackson
Italy – the world’s fourth most visited country by foreigners – attracted more than 60 million travelers in 2023. Almost 5.4 million U.S. citizens visited that year, including residents of Jackson and other towns throughout Mississippi, placing the United States behind only Germany as a top source of tourists to enjoy Italy’s historic treasures, religious sites, beaches, and ski resorts.
The Italian Republic covers more than 116,000 square miles, mostly on a peninsula that reaches from the mountainous Alps to the Mediterranean Sea. The country also includes Sicily, Sardinia, and almost 800 other islands. Bordered by France, Switzerland, Austria, and Slovenia, Italy also borders two landlocked enclaves: Vatican City and San Marino. Rome is Italy’s capital and largest city; other major metropolitan areas include Milan, Naples, Venice, Turin, and Florence.
For centuries, Rome was the center of the Roman Empire, ruling lands surrounding the Mediterranean Sea and reaching as far north as Britain. It has also been the center of the Catholic Church for centuries. After the fall of the Roman Empire, Italy dissolved into a network of city-states and maritime republics. It became the epicenter of the Renaissance movement that spread across Europe in the 15th and 16th Centuries. In 1861, the territories of Italy were reunited as the Kingdom of Italy, which continued until a fascist dictatorship was established in 1922. After Italy was on the losing side in World War II, it established the democratic republic that continues to govern the nation.
The country of almost 60 million enjoys the third-largest economy in the European Union and the eight-largest global economy by nominal GDP. While Italy’s economy was based on agriculture before World War II, it has since evolved into the EU’s second-largest manufacturer and is a global exporter of machinery, pharmaceuticals, fashion, vehicles, and other goods. Two-way trade in goods and services between Italy and the United States reached a record $117 billion in 2022, according to the U.S. Commerce Department’s International Trade Administration (ITA). “U.S. exports to Italy are concentrated in such high-value sectors as oil and gas, precious metals, machinery, and pharmaceuticals,” ITA stated. “The United States remains by far Italy’s largest non-EU export market with roughly a 10% share of all exports and a 22% share of all non-EU exports. In 2022, the United States was Italy’s second largest destination for exports, after Germany, with U.S. imports from Italy totaling $80.2 billion.” (https://www.trade.gov/country-commercial-guides/italy-market-overview) The best opportunities for Jackson-based companies to export to Italy are found in the advanced manufacturing, airport equipment, automobiles, biotechnology, cybersecurity, medical devices, and renewable energy sectors.
Travel and tourism comprise an important sector of the economy, contributing 10.5% of Italy’s economic output in 2023 at Euro 215 billion (US $231 billion), according to the World Travel and Tourism Council (https://wttc.org/news-article/travel-and-tourism-injected-215-euros-bn-into-italys-economy). While most foreign visitors to Italy hail from Europe, the United States is the second-ranked country for inbound tourists and fourth for tourist revenues. “The resurgence of international visitors to Italy has been notably strong,” WTTC added, “highlighting Italy’s appeal as a premier global destination.”
WTCC also called Italy “one of the world’s most iconic destinations.” The main factors driving residents of the Jackson area to visit Italy include the country’s history, culture, cuisine, fashion, architecture, art, religious sites, mountains, islands, underwater destinations, and healing spas. Italy is home to 60 UNESCO World Heritage sites – the most of any country in the world. The historic center of Rome includes Vatican City, St Mark’s Basilica, the Sistine Chapel, and other religious buildings of papal Rome. Other UNESCO sites include the Leaning Tower of Pisa; the ancient Via Appia (Appian Way); the iconic canals of Venice, the ruins of Pompeii; volcanic Mount Etna; the Medici villas and gardens at Tuscany; and the Church and Dominican Convent of Santa Maria delle Grazie in Milan, which contains “The Last Supper” by Leonardo da Vinci.
Rome, one of the world’s most visited cities, also features such landmarks and ancient ruins as the Roman Forums, the Pantheon, the Colosseum, and the Fontana di Trevi (Trevi Fountain). The city is also known for its museums, public statues, artwork (such as Michelangelo's Moses), catacombs, and shopping venues. Milan, the second-largest city and another Top 10 city for tourism, accounts for about 10% of Italy’s tourist visits. The global fashion capital features historic architecture, museums, artwork, Sforza Castle, and literary landmarks from the Italian Renaissance and the Age of Enlightenment. The third-largest city, Naples, is considered the birthplace of pizza and one of the driving forces in modern theater. Its attractions include the Neapolitan Academy of Fine Arts and its historic Centre, a UNESCO site that features the medieval Church of Santa Chiara complex and the castle of Castel Nuovo.
Beyond the historic and religious attractions of Italy’s urban areas, the country offers a variety of outdoor activities and picturesque rural villages, with accommodations ranging from luxury resorts and boutique hotels to rustic farmhouses. Mountains cover 75% of the country, including the Alps, Apennine, and Dolomite ranges. Its mountains, valleys, and rivers offer opportunities for residents of Jackson for snow skiing, hiking, biking, canyoning, rock climbing, and whitewater rafting. The lakes of Italy are also tourist favorites, particularly scenic Lake Como and its mountains, villas, 11th Century abbey, and picturesque resort towns. Italy’s coastline stretches more than 5,000 miles, bordering not only the Mediterranean Sea but also the Adriatic, Ionian, Ligurian, and Tyrrhenian seas. The Italian Riviera features world-renown beaches, rocky cliffs, cruise ports, and numerous coastal resorts. The islands of Sicily and Sardinia (the two largest in the Mediterranean) offer their own mountains and UNESCO sites. They are known for white pebble and sand beaches, turquoises seas, olive groves, open-air markets, golf courses, sea kayaking, sailing, windsurfing, and scuba diving and snorkeling sites.
How to Make a Short-Term Visit to Italy
Citizens of the United States and most other countries living in the Jackson area are not required to obtain a visa for visits to Italy that last no more than 90 days. Italy is among the roughly 30 European countries that are parties to the Schengen Agreement, which allows visa-free movement among those nations. This visa exemption covers tourists, businesspeople, and exchange students. If your passport is not issued by one of the Schengen Zone’s 60+ visa-free countries, you will need to obtain a short-term Schengen visa (see next section).
To enter Italy, your passport must be valid for at least three months beyond your departure date, the U.S. State Department noted. You will also need a return plane ticket and proof of sufficient funds to last throughout your stay. You can also travel to other Schengen countries during your stay in Italy. The Schengen Zone includes all but two members of the European Union (Ireland and Cyprus), plus four non-EU nations: Iceland, Lichtenstein, Norway, and Switzerland. {Countries within the United Kingdom are not part of the Schengen Zone.}
However, an additional set of rules being implemented in mid-2025 will affect non-visa travelers. Citizens of the United States and other visa-exempt countries will need to obtain a new travel authorization, the European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS), before arriving in any of the participating European Union countries. To check on the countries affected by ETIAS, implementation dates, and to apply once the program goes live, visit https://travel-europe.europa.eu/etias_en.
Obtaining a National Visa for Italy
Residents of Jackson who do not qualify for visa-free travel or want to spend more than 90 days in Italy need to obtain a national visa through the Italian embassy in Washington, D.C., or one of its U.S. consulates. Residents of Mississippi are served by the Italian consulate in Miami (4000 Ponce de Leon, Suite 590, Coral Gables, FL 33146). Residents of other states can determine which consulate serves their region at https://ambwashingtondc.esteri.it/en/chi-siamo/la-rete-consolare/.
The Italian government offers several national visas for such groups as tourist, business, study, digital nomad/remote worker, religious, and sport. Fees for national visa fees range from $54.90 for a long-term study visa (more than 90 days) to $127.50 for other long-term visas. However, rates are updated each quarter. Current visa and consular fees are listed at https://consmiami.esteri.it/en/news/dal_consolato/2016/08/tabella-percezioni-consolari-del-2/.
A national visa for Italy also lets you visit other Schengen Zone nations. Types of national visas include:
- Tourism
- Business
- Retirement (known as elective residency: https://consmiami.esteri.it/wp-content/uploads/2023/10/ELECTIVE_RESIDENCY_VISA_istruzioni_Miami.pdf)
- Study
- Remote worker
- Self-employment/nomad visa

- Passport with at least two blank pages, issued within the last 10 years, and valid at least three months beyond your last departure date from Italy.
- Passport-style photo.
- Proof of residence (such as driver’s license or state ID) from a state within the consulate’s jurisdiction.

Additional documentation varies by the category of national visas sought. The full list of visas and details about each can be found at https://consmiami.esteri.it/en/servizi-consolari-e-visti/foreign-citizen-services/visti/.
Residents of Jackson and the state of Mississippi must make an appointment and appear in person at the Italian consulate in Miami. You should book your appointment no more than six months ahead of your trip through the embassy website at https://prenotami.esteri.it/. Office hours are Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday from 9 am to 12:30 pm. Bring copies of all the required documentation. Visa fees and biometrics (fingerprints) will be collected during the appointment.
“Passports and visas will be returned exclusively by mail,” the embassy stated on its website. “The applicant must bring a self-addressed, prepaid or stamped envelope. The Visa Office will accept only USPS Express Mail prepaid envelopes from the U.S. Postal Service (no FedEx, no UPS).”
NOTE: Anyone planning to stay longer than 90 days will need to obtain a residency permit from the local police department within eight days of arrival. More details are available at https://www.poliziadistato.it/articolo/10617.
Obtaining a Schengen Visa for Foreign Nationals
Travelers living in the Jackson area who hold a passport from a country that does not have a visa-free travel agreement for the Schengen Zone (including those residing in the United States) will need to obtain a Schengen visa to visit Italy and other countries in the Schengen Zone. This traditional visa, affixed to your passport, allows you to stay up to 90 days during a six-month period.
The visa is available for single entry, multiple entries, and airport transit within an international airport. Citizens of certain countries may need to obtain a Schengen airport transit visa if they are changing planes within the Schengen Zone. Those countries whose citizens need a Schengen visa, exceptions to transit visa rules, and other details can be found at this European Union site: https://home-affairs.ec.europa.eu/policies/schengen-borders-and-visa/visa-policy_en. General details about the visa and an online application are available at https://home-affairs.ec.europa.eu/policies/schengen-borders-and-visa/visa-policy/applying-schengen-visa_en.
You should apply for the Schengen visa through the country where so will spend the most time. If Italy is your primary destination (or your port of entry if you plan to spend equal amounts of time in multiple countries), you need to apply through an Italian embassy or consulate. Residents of Mississippi, Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Puerto Rico, and several other Caribbean islands must apply through the Miami consulate. Details on Italy’s Schengen Tourist/Transit Visas and Schengen Business Visas (plus links to applications) can be found at https://consmiami.esteri.it/en/servizi-consolari-e-visti/foreign-citizen-services/visti/.
Apply at least 15 days before your trip, as your Schengen visa from Italy will not take effect for at least two weeks. However, we recommend applying for the visa several months in advance, especially if you plan to travel during the high season (late spring through early fall), because it will be difficult to secure an appointment. You will need to make an appointment through the consulate’s website at https://prenotami.esteri.it/. Fees are currently $98.70 for citizens of most countries for the short-term (90-day) tourist visa. However, fees are updated quarterly, so use this site to determine current rates: https://consmiami.esteri.it/en/news/dal_consolato/2016/08/tabella-percezioni-consolari-del-2/. Schengen visa fees are payable by cashier’s check or money order made out to the “Consulate General of Italy”.
For your appointment, you will need to bring originals and copies of:
- Completed application form, found at link above.
- Passport with at least two blank pages, issued within the past 10 years and valid for at least three months beyond your expected departure date (or final departure, if making multiple entries).
- Proof of residence (such as driver’s license or state ID) for a state within the consulate’s jurisdiction.
- A copy of your permanent residence card (“green card) or valid U.S. visa.
- Recent photograph.
- Proof of sufficient funds to cover your trip.
- Round-trip transportation and proof of accommodations.
- Proof of medical insurance totaling 30,000 Euros (about US $32,000) valid throughout the Schengen Zone. International medical insurance from GeoBlue can be purchased from Visa Supply online through the following link: ⇒ Order Now.
- Completed “Declaration for Mailing Passports,” available on the consulate site.
- Self-addressed envelope, per instructions above for national visa.
For a business visa, you will also need to provide a letter from your employer confirming your position, while self-employed persons need to provide a business license or certificate of incorporation. You will also need to provide a letter of invitation from an Italian business.
The Schengen Visa allows you to move freely between the countries in the Schengen Zone for up to 90 days within a 180-day period. If your application is accepted, you will receive a sticker (called a vignette) to add to your passport. The vignette includes the type of visa issued, start and end dates, and any conditions attached to the visa.
