How to Apply for a Uganda Visa in Atlanta

Atlanta has a population of 6.1 million people, making it the 9th most populous metropolitan area in the United States.  The city, known by locals as “The A”, is the commercial capital of the Southeast and has the third-highest concentration of Fortune 500 companies in the country.  The Atlanta metro area includes the municipalities of Dunwoody, Sandy Springs, Roswell, Alpharetta, Marietta, Duluth, Norcross, Tucker, Decatur, Mableton, and others.  Atlanta is a diverse and international city that in recent years has attracted a growing number of East African immigrants, including a few hundred people whose native land is Uganda.  There is an Atlanta chapter of the Ugandan North American Association that in years past has hosted social events for people with ties to Uganda.  Atlanta is home to a few nonprofit organizations and church groups doing work in Uganda.  The Carter Center and Habitat for Humanity—two of the most famous organizations in Atlanta doing international work—have supported Ugandans for many years by helping to eradicate disease, mediating conflict, and providing health education and housing to people in the rural parts of the country.  Kampala, Uganda’s capital and largest city, can be reached from Atlanta with one stop in Doha (Qatar) on Qatar Airways.

Uganda is a landlocked East African country with a population of over 45 million people that is roughly the size of the combined land area of Georgia and South Carolina.  Located in the African Great Lakes region, Uganda is bordered by Lake Victoria, the world’s second largest freshwater lake by surface area and primary source of water for the Nile River.  Although there are over 40 languages spoken in Uganda, English is the dominant language due to the country’s status as a protectorate of the British Empire from 1894 – 1962.  Entebbe International Airport is Uganda’s only international airport and is located about 25 miles from Kampala.  This bustling and chaotic city is a must-visit destination for Atlanta visitors interested in experiencing the energy and culture of modern-day urban Africa.  Kampala is a great city where you can rub elbows with the locals by visiting a local market or eat street food during the day, and then drop by the upscale Kololo neighborhood at night to enjoy fine dining and cocktails.  Most tourists come to Uganda to visit the country’s beautiful natural environment and wildlife.  Known as the “Pearl of Africa”, Uganda is the top destination for mountain gorilla and chimpanzee trekking expeditions.  There are ten national parks including Murchison Falls, Queen Elizabeth, and Kibale.

Obtaining a Uganda Visa from Atlanta

In the United States the government of Uganda is represented by their embassy located in Washington, D.C. along with their permanent mission to the United Nations located in New York City, however, visas are now issued electronically through the following online portal: https://visas.immigration.go.ug/ so there is no need to send your actual passport to the embassy or consulate.

It is important to note that visas are no longer issued on arrival at the airport in Uganda so you must apply for the visa before starting your journey, otherwise you will not be granted entry into the country.  Furthermore, it is unlikely your departure airline will allow you to board a flight to Uganda without a printout of the online visa approval.  The electronic visa normally takes about three business days to process once the application has been submitted.

Other things to consider:

  • All Americans require a visa to enter Uganda along with a valid passport.  It is advisable to have a passport that still has 6 months of validity upon departing Uganda (in case it is necessary to transit or have a stopover in a European country that has this 6-month policy).
  • The Government of Uganda requires all travelers to show proof of full COVID-19 vaccinations, except for travelers aged 5 years and below.  Boosters are not considered a requirement in Uganda.  Travelers with partial or no vaccination will be required to present a negative PCR test done within 72 hours of travel.  Travelers are also required to have a Yellow Fever Vaccination Certificate.  Please use the following link from the Center for Disease Control website to find the nearest clinic offering the yellow fever vaccine: Search for Stamaril yellow fever vaccination clinics | Travelers' Health | CDC
  • During the application process, applicants will be required to upload supporting documents related to their trip to Uganda: applicants applying for a tourist visa will upload their round-trip flight itinerary; business travelers or those traveling for a conference will upload an invitation letter from a company in Uganda and a copy of that company’s registration along with the applicant’s round-trip flight itinerary; applicants traveling to Uganda to visit family will provide an invitation letter from that family member along with a copy of their Ugandan passport or identity card and round-trip flight itinerary. Applicants will also need to upload a clear passport-style image of themselves against a plain white background and scan of the data page of their passport.  All travelers are required to upload a Yellow Fever Vaccination Certificate.
  • Single-entry visas are valid for travel within 3 months of the date of issue so applicants should not apply too early for their visa.
  • Applicants traveling to Uganda for tourist purposes also have the option to apply for the East African Tourist Visa.  This visa allows travel to Kenya, Rwanda, and Uganda.
  • Please review the latest passport, visa, and health requirements on the IATA Travel Centre website: https://www.iata.org/en/publications/travel-documentation/
  • It is recommended to purchase travel insurance before any international trip in case of medical emergencies.  We advise getting the Geo Blue Voyager Single Trip Plan.
