How to Apply for a Singapore Visa in Cincinnati
Singapore, the modern city-state located just off the Malaysian peninsula, draws leisure and business travelers from Cincinnati and across the globe with its modern amenities and spectacular natural beauty. The island nation offers travelers amazing beaches, state-of-the-art accommodations, exciting nightlife, and unique culinary experiences that rival those of “The Crescent City.”.
Now known as the Republic of Singapore, the tropical archipelago was known for centuries for the marine trading post Temasek. In the early 1800s, Sir Thomas Stamford Raffles of Great Britain established a port of call in Singapore, eventually transforming the island into a major trading center and a British colony. Occupied by Japan during the World War II, Singapore separated from Britain in 1959 and became a sovereign nation in 1965. Today the “Switzerland of Asia” is a global financial and corporate center that ranks among the most prosperous nations around the globe. Despite being one of the most densely populated countries in the world, Singapore boasts clean modern streets, low crime rates, futuristic skyscrapers, and one of the world’s busiest ports.
The “Lion City” offers a distinctive blend of Malaysian, British, Indian, Chinese, and Arab cultures. Most of the country’s population of 5.6 million citizens—which is about double the population of the Cincinnati metropolitan area—are bilingual, speaking English (used for business, law, and education) plus Malay, Mandarin, or Tamil. Those cultural influences are best reflected in Singapore’s diverse food choices, ranging from Chinese food halls to exquisite Indian restaurants. Despite the lengthy flight time from North American cities like Cincinnati, citizens of the United States rank among the top 10 nationalities visiting Singapore.
Tourism is one of the leading industries in Singapore. Its flag carrier, Singapore Airlines, frequently ranks as the top airline in the world. Its hub at Singapore Changi Airport provides a gateway to the other Southeast Asia destinations. (The airport also contains the world’s largest indoor waterfall.) Most urban activities are found in the Central Business District (CBD), which includes the Orchard Road shopping mall district, the skyscraper-filled financial district of Shenton Way, and Marina Bay’s hotels, retailers, casino, and convention center. Top attractions include the Masjid Sultan mosque, Thian Hock Keng Temple, Victoria Theater and Concert Hall, and numerous landmarks from the Colonial era. Visit the Long Bar at the historic Raffles Singapore Hotel, where the Singapore Sling was created in 1915. While most residents live in smaller towns surrounding the CBD, they also seek out the nightlife, coffee shops, museums, theaters, and festivals downtown.
Singapore is also known as a garden city. More than 50% of its land remains is green, with more than 50 major parks, four nature reserves, and three zoos. The 160-year-old Singapore Botanic Gardens (a 52-hectacre UNESCO World Heritage Site), Jurong Bird Park, and the Garden by the Bay are popular tourist draws. The open-concept Singapore Zoo is flanked by Night Safari (the world’s first nocturnal zoo) and the River Waters aquarium. Bukit Timah Nature Reserve contains the last remaining primary rainforest in Singapore, while offshore Pulau Ubin contains the nation’s only remaining undeveloped traditional villages.
Located less than 100 miles north of the equator, Singapore enjoys a tropical rainforest climate that may feel similar to Cincinnati’s weather during the summer months when the humidity is high. The island provides an ideal location for top resorts such as the Marina Bay Sands, home to the world’s largest infinity pool. The city’s two casinos are at Marina Bay Sands and Resorts World Sentosa, an integrated beachfront resort that includes the Universal Studios Singapore theme park. Sentosa Island also features an historical museum at Fort Siloso, the SEA Aquarium, and Madame Tussauds Singapore. Divers and snorkelers are drawn to the 5,000-year-old coral reef at Chek Jawa. Other popular outdoor activities include scuba diving with turtles and seahorses at Pulau Hantu; exploring the youngster-friendly Changi Beach Intertidal walking trail; touring the mangrove forest at Sungei Buloh Wetland Reserve; horseback riding in Pasir Ris and Bukit Timah; kayak fishing; and test driving the new ocean-going water bicycle.
Singapore Visa Requirements
U.S. passport holders and citizens of most other nations are not required to obtain a visa for tourist or business trips to Singapore lasting less than 90 days. The main requirements for short-term U.S. visitors are holding a passport for at least six months and meeting the COVID-19 and yellow fever requirements listed below.
However, residents of Cincinnati holding travel documents from 35 other countries—including China, India, and Russia—are required to obtain a visa. The complete list of countries can be found at https://www.mfa.gov.sg/Overseas-Mission/Washington/Visa-and-Entry-Requirements. (The site also details the procedure for obtaining an electronic visa through the Singapore embassy in Washington, D.C. by mail, in person, or online for those who do require a visa for such reasons at long-term visits or employment.) You can access specific requirements for each jurisdiction by clicking on the country name at https://www.ica.gov.sg/enter-transit-depart/entering-singapore/visa_requirements.
The public health requirements for foreign nationals entering Singapore are the same regardless of visa status, as detailed at https://www.ica.gov.sg/enter-transit-depart/entering-singapore:
- Vaccinated travelers 13 and older must present proof of receiving a minimum number of doses at least two weeks before arrival.
- Unvaccinated travelers must take a COVID-19 PCR or ART test taken within two days of department and present proof of positive results.
- Minors ages 12 and below are exempt from COVID border requirements.
- If you are arriving from a country that the World Health Organization has designated with significant risk of yellow fever, you must provide an international certification of vaccination (“yellow card). A current WHO list of at-risk countries is available at https://www.ica.gov.sg/enter-transit-depart/entering-singapore/yellow-fever-vaccination-certificate.
- Health Insurance. Although not required for the visa, we recommend purchasing international medical insurance to cover accidents, injuries, and illnesses while traveling in Singapore. International medical insurance from GeoBlue can be purchased from Visa Supply online through the following link: ⇒ Order Now.
Obtaining a Singapore Arrival Card
While most travelers from Cincinnati are not required to obtain a visa to visit Singapore, they must still obtain a free Singapore arrival card (SGAC) at least three days before departure. The SGAC is an electronic travel document that provides the Singaporean government with basic travel and identity information before you arrive. The entire process is done online through the official portal at https://eservices.ica.gov.sg/sgarrivalcard. You can also apply for an extension of the six-month visitation period at the site after arrival.
The SGAC process takes one to two days to complete. Requirements include:
- A completed application form;
- Passport information; and
- Active email account.
Upon arrival in Singapore, you will need to present:
- Passport valid for at least six months;
- Downloaded SGAC document or emailed confirmation;
- Proof of onward travel and sufficient cash for your trip; and
- Visa (if required).
