How to Apply for a Sierra Leone Visa in Washington D.C.

Washington, D.C. is the capital of the United States and is an important global city that attracts visitors from all over the world.  The Washington, D.C. Metropolitan Area—which includes the District of Columbia and parts of Virginia, Maryland, and West Virginia—is America’s sixth-largest metropolis and has a population of 6.3 million people.  Cities within this area (apart from the District of Columbia) include Alexandria, Annandale, Arlington, Fairfax, Falls Church, and Reston—all in Virginia—along with the Maryland towns of Bethesda, College Park, Frederick, Gaithersburg, Rockville, and Silver Spring.  The Washington, D.C. Metropolitan Area has the largest population of Sierra Leonean immigrants in the United States and there are many nonprofit organizations in the suburbs of Virginia and Maryland that each have their own activities and projects to support this community.  Washington, D.C. is home to several U.S. federal government agencies offering support to the people of Sierra Leone such as USAID, Peace Corps, and Millennium Challenge Corporation.  Historically, Sierra Leone has deep ties to this part of the country: Annapolis, Maryland was the arrival point for many slave ships departing from Bunce Island, Sierra Leone during the Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade era.

Sierra Leone is a West African country of 7.1 million people that sits along 300 miles of Atlantic Ocean coastline and is over three times the size of Maryland by land area.  English is Sierra Leone’s official language, but Krio is the national language spoken on the streets of Freetown—the nation's capital and largest city with over one million residents.  Sierra Leone is composed of several ethnic groups including Mende, Temne, Limba, Kono, Mandingo, Krio, and others.  This is a poor country whose economy depends on mining and agriculture, but it is also a country of rich fertile land that has tremendous opportunities.  The government of Sierra Leone is encouraging entrepreneurs in cities like Washington, D.C. to consider their country as a destination for investment.  Sierra Leone is also emerging as a popular destination as more Americans gain interest in learning about their ancestral heritage.  There are several historic sites to explore around Freetown such as Bunce Island, Old Fourah Bay College, The King’s Yard, and The Cotton Tree.  Others may enjoy shopping for traditional arts and crafts at Big Market in Freetown or a hike to Leicester Peak for a view of the city.  Visitors can escape the clamor of Freetown and enjoy a cocktail by the pool at one of the city’s seaside resorts.

Other things to consider:

Americans will be issued a 3-year multiple-entry visa by the embassy.
  • Your U.S. passport must be signed; the signature page of your passport is located opposite the data page that has your name and photo.
  • All visitors to Sierra Leone are required to have a valid World Health Organization (WHO) card with yellow fever vaccination. Please use the following link from the Center for Disease Control website to find the nearest clinic offering the yellow fever vaccine: Search for Stamaril yellow fever vaccination clinics | Travelers' Health | CDC
