How to Apply for a Sierra Leone Visa in Phoenix

Phoenix is the capital of Arizona and is the largest city in the Mountain Time Zone.  The Phoenix Metropolitan Area has a population of 4.8 million—the tenth largest metropolitan area in the United States—and is one of the fastest growing cities in America.  New residents and businesses come here for the low cost of living and year-round warm weather.  Phoenix gets more sunshine than any other major city on the planet.  The Phoenix Metropolitan Area, also known as the Valley, includes the cities of Casa Grande, Chandler, Gilbert, Glendale, Maricopa, Mesa, Peoria, Scottsdale, Surprise, and Tempe.  The Valley has a strong base of semiconductor, electronics, and aerospace manufacturers.  Real estate, construction, healthcare, financial services, and tourism are also major components of the Phoenix economy, which has over 200 golf courses, 500 hotels, and 40 resorts.  Phoenix has a small population of West African immigrants and an even smaller number of immigrants from Sierra Leone, but nevertheless, there are Sierra Leoneans in Arizona.  Many of these immigrants came nearly two decades ago during the end of the Sierra Leone Civil War.

Sierra Leone is a West African country of 7.1 million people bordering the Atlantic Ocean that is about a quarter the size of Arizona by land area.  English is Sierra Leone’s official language, but Krio is the national language spoken on the streets of Freetown—the nation's capital and largest city with over a million residents.  Sierra Leone is composed of several ethnic groups including Mende, Temne, Limba, Mandingo, Krio, and others.  This is a poor country whose economy is still developing, but it is also a country of rich fertile land with untapped opportunity for entrepreneurs in U.S. cities like Phoenix with experience in the agriculture, construction, energy, mining, and tourism industries.  On the tourist front, Sierra Leone is emerging as a popular destination as more Americans gain interest in learning about their ancestral heritage.  There are several historic sites to explore around Freetown such as Bunce Island, King’s Yard, Old Fourah Bay College, and The Cotton Tree.  Others may enjoy shopping for traditional arts and crafts at Big Market, a hike to Leicester Peak for a view of the city, or a walk along Lumley Beach to enjoy the sea breeze and a cold drink.  There are also plenty of charming seaside resorts located along the white-sand beaches of Freetown Peninsula south of the city.

Obtaining a Sierra Leone Visa from Phoenix

Visas for Sierra Leone are issued by the Sierra Leonean government in the United States.  The government of Sierra Leone is represented by the embassy located in Washington, D.C.  To apply for a Sierra Leone visa from Phoenix, you can appear in person at the embassy or you can send the required application documents by US Mail, FedEx, or UPS to this address:

Embassy of Sierra Leone
1701 19th Street, NW
Washington, D.C. 20009-1605

It is important to review the requirements for visas on the Sierra Leone embassy website and ensure your application and all supporting documents are accurate.  Here is the link to the embassy website with detailed information: Visa Services | Republic of Sierra Leone Embassy in United States of America (embassyofsierraleone.net).  You will also include a self-addressed USPS (US Postal Service Express Mail or Priority Mail), FedEx, or UPS prepaid envelope (please make note of the tracking number) along with a money order or cashier’s check made payable to “Embassy of Sierra Leone” to pay the visa fee (cash payments or personal checks are not accepted).  The visa fee for U.S. citizens is $160 and the processing time will take about one week to process plus transit time.  If you need the visa faster, there is an option to pay an additional $50 to have the visa processed in one or two days.  If you absolutely must have the visa processed in one day, we suggest appearing in person at the embassy or hiring a visa agent to assist with the process.

Other things to consider:

  • It may be possible to obtain a single-entry visa on arrival at Lungi International Airport (Freetown), however, it is recommended that you obtain a visa in advance at the embassy before your trip to ensure smooth boarding on your departing flight and easy-entry into the country. Americans will be issued a 3-year multiple-entry visa by the embassy.
  • Your U.S. passport must be signed; the signature page of your passport is located opposite the data page that has your name and photo.
  • All visitors to Sierra Leone are required to have a valid World Health Organization (WHO) card with yellow fever vaccination. Please use the following link from the Center for Disease Control website to find the nearest clinic offering the yellow fever vaccine: Search for Stamaril yellow fever vaccination clinics | Travelers' Health | CDC
  • It is recommended to purchase travel insurance before any international trip in case of medical emergencies.  We advise getting the Geo Blue Voyager Single Trip Plan.
