How to Apply for a Sierra Leone Visa in Houston
Greater Houston is the fifth most-populous metropolitan area in the United States and has a population of over 7 million residents. Houston is one of America’s most ethnically diverse cities. With over 145 different languages being spoken in this global city, it is no surprise that Houston has plenty of great restaurants offering delicious cuisine from all over the world, including several West African restaurants. This is a fast-growing and youthful city that attracts entrepreneurs, corporate businesspeople, international investors, and students. Houston is home to the country’s oil and gas industry; a few Houston-based energy companies have been involved in oil exploration off the coast of Sierra Leone, but no commercially viable discoveries have been made yet. Greater Houston encompasses nine counties and includes the cities of Sugar Land, Baytown, Conroe, Pasadena, Pearland, The Woodlands, and Galveston. Houston has a large West African immigrant population, and the city hosts many annual festivals and events celebrating the various West African cultures found throughout the area. While Nigerians are the dominant group within this community, there is still a substantial population of Sierra Leoneans in Houston.
Sierra Leone is a West African nation of 7.1 million people that sits along the Atlantic Ocean and is about one-tenth the size of Texas by land area. English is Sierra Leone’s official language, but Krio (an English-based creole language brought to the country by freed slaves from North America) is the language spoken on the streets of Freetown—the nation's capital and most-populous city. Sierra Leone is composed of several ethnic groups including Mende, Temne, Limba, Kono, Mandingo, Krio, and others. This is a poor country whose economy depends on mining and agriculture, but it is also a country of rich fertile land with tremendous opportunities. The government of Sierra Leone is encouraging entrepreneurs in U.S. cities like Houston to consider their country as a destination for investment. On the tourist front, Sierra Leone is emerging as a popular tourist destination as more Americans gain interest in learning about their ancestral heritage. There are many historic sites to explore near Freetown such as Bunce Island, the Banana Islands, and Krio villages. Others may enjoy shopping for traditional arts and crafts at Big Market in Freetown. The city also happens to be situated along beautiful white-sand beaches that have a stunning backdrop of hills and mountains.
Obtaining a Sierra Leone Visa from Houston
Visas for Sierra Leone are issued by the Sierra Leonean government in the United States. The government of Sierra Leone is represented by the embassy located in Washington, D.C. To apply for a Sierra Leone visa from Houston, you can appear in person at the embassy or you can send the required application documents by US Mail, FedEx, or UPS to this address:
Embassy of Sierra Leone
1701 19th Street, NW
Washington, D.C. 20009-1605
It is important to review the requirements for visas on the Sierra Leone embassy website and ensure your application and all supporting documents are accurate. Here is the link to the embassy website with detailed information: Visa Services | Republic of Sierra Leone Embassy in United States of America (embassyofsierraleone.net). You will also include a self-addressed USPS (US Postal Service Express Mail or Priority Mail), FedEx, or UPS prepaid envelope (please make note of the tracking number) along with a money order or cashier’s check made payable to “Embassy of Sierra Leone” to pay the visa fee (cash payments or personal checks are not accepted). The visa fee for U.S. citizens is $160 and the processing time will take about one week to process plus transit time. If you need the visa faster, there is an option to pay an additional $50 to have the visa processed in one or two days. If you absolutely must have the visa processed in one day, we suggest appearing in person at the embassy or hiring a visa agent to assist with the process.
Other things to consider:
- It may be possible to obtain a single-entry visa on arrival at Lungi International Airport (Freetown), however, it is recommended that you obtain a visa in advance at the embassy before your trip to ensure smooth boarding on your departing flight and easy-entry into the country. Americans will be issued a 3-year multiple-entry visa by the embassy.
- Your U.S. passport must be signed; the signature page of your passport is located opposite the data page that has your name and photo.
- All visitors to Sierra Leone are required to have a valid World Health Organization (WHO) card with yellow fever vaccination. Please use the following link from the Center for Disease Control website to find the nearest clinic offering the yellow fever vaccine: Search for Stamaril yellow fever vaccination clinics | Travelers' Health | CDC
- It is recommended to purchase travel insurance before any international trip in case of medical emergencies. We advise getting the Geo Blue Voyager Single Trip Plan.
