How to Apply for a Nigeria Visa in San Diego

San Diego is America’s 17th-most populous city and is the third-most populous urban area in the state of California.  This metropolis of 3.3 million residents shares a 15-mile border with Mexico, where just to the other side sits Tijuana—Mexico’s sixth-most populous city.  About 200,000 people cross the border each day, making this one of the busiest land borders in the world.  San Diego is well known for its mild Mediterranean climate, which some consider to be the best in the U.S.  The San Diego metropolitan area includes cities such as Carlsbad, Chula Vista, El Cajon, San Marcos, Santee, La Mesa, National City, Oceanside, Vista, and Encinitas.  The Nigerian immigrant population in San Diego is not huge, so if you are an American wanting to get more insight into this country before your travels, there are lots of great websites to gather information like Lost in Lagos, Alabosi, Nairaland, IROKOtv, Nairametrics, and Vanguard.

Nigeria is a West African country located on the Gulf of Guinea that is roughly twice the size of California.  Nigeria is the most populous country in Africa and seventh most-populous in the world.  Known as the “Giant of Africa”, Nigeria has the largest economy in Africa and is well known for its huge oil and gas sector, but less well known is its growing manufacturing sector that is exporting industrial products across the continent.  Nigeria also has a dynamic film and entertainment industry known as “Nollywood” that producers nearly 2,000 movies each year and employs over 1 million people.  The tourist sector of Nigeria has been growing as more tourists from overseas come to absorb Nigerian culture through its music, nightlife, festivals, and markets in cities like Lagos, Abuja, and Calabar.  English is the official language of Nigeria, but Igbo, Yoruba, and Hausa are some of its most widely spoken native languages.

Obtaining a Nigerian Visa from San Diego

Nigerian visas are issued by the Nigerian government in the United States.  The Nigerian government is represented by two consulates (there is one located in Atlanta and the other is in New York City) and one embassy, located in Washington, D.C.  To apply for a Nigerian visa from San Diego, you must contact OIS Services (the contractor for the Nigerian government) and appear in person at one of their offices.  There is an OIS office in Los Angeles along with OIS offices in Atlanta, Houston, New York City, and Washington, D.C.  Please check the website of OIS for more details about their contact information and give them a call to ensure their office is open:  https://oisservices.com/

It is a good idea to review the requirements for the visa on the Nigerian consulate website.  Here is the link to the consulate website in Atlanta: https://nigeria-consulate-atl.org/visas/.  As mentioned on the consulate website, you will apply for the visa online here: https://portal.immigration.gov.ng/.  You will make payment to the Nigerian Immigration Service through Innovate 1 Services using that same website.  You will then gather all the necessary documents for the type of visa you are applying for (tourist, business, etc.) and appear in person at the OIS Services office in Los Angeles (or Atlanta, Houston, New York, or Washington D.C.).
