How to Apply for a Nepal Visa in Atlanta

Atlanta has a population of 6.1 million people, making it the 9th most populous metropolitan area in the United States.  Atlanta is the capital of Georgia, which is the 8th most populous of the 50 states.  The city and surrounding area—known as the Atlanta metropolitan area—is also the commercial capital of the Southeast United States and has the third-largest concentration of Fortune 500 companies in the country.  The metropolitan area includes the municipalities of Dunwoody, Sandy Springs, Chamblee, Roswell, Alpharetta, Marietta, Duluth, Norcross, Tucker, Decatur, Mableton, Clarkston, Conyers, and others.  Atlanta is a diverse and international city that includes a growing population of immigrants from South Asia, including newcomers from Nepal.  The Atlanta metropolitan area has a population of around 5,000 immigrants from Nepal and is home to the Nepalese Association of Georgia, an organization whose mission is to preserve and promote Nepali cultural heritage.  This organization celebrates several events throughout the year such as Nepal New Year and Hindu festivals like Dashain, Tihar, and Hartalika Teej.  Atlanta also has a Nepali Cultural Center that provides Nepali language lessons and even has a few restaurants that serve traditional dishes from Nepal.

Nepal is a country in South Asia with a population of 29 million people composed of 123 ethnic groups speaking nearly a hundred different languages, with Nepali being the country’s official language.  Nepal is slightly smaller by land area than Georgia but has almost three time as many residents as the Peach State.  This is a country with an ancient history and culture that is tied to the Indus Valley, one of the oldest civilizations on the planet.  Many visitors are drawn to Nepal to learn about its culture and spiritual traditions centered around the Hindu and Buddhist religions.  Kathmandu, the capital and most populous city of Nepal, is home to several religious and historical attractions such as Durbar Square, Boudhanath Stupa, Swayambhunath Temple, Pashupatinath Temple, and Kapan Monastery.  Like other major cities in South Asia, Kathmandu is dense, chaotic, and dusty, but there are several excellent restaurants and 5-star hotels for those travelers who prefer luxury options.  Kathmandu is also well known as an iconic backpacker’s travel destination because it one of the least expensive capital cities in the world.  Whether a backpacker or luxury traveler, most visitors come to Nepal to experience its majestic mountains, which includes Mount Everest, the highest point on Earth.

Obtaining a Nepal Visa from Atlanta

Visas for Nepal are issued by the Nepal government in the United States.  The government of Nepal is represented by their embassy in Washington, D.C. and a consulate in New York City.  Visas are also issued in Nepal by the Department of Immigration through their website and on arrival at the airport (please see “other things to consider” section below).  Here is the link to their website: https://www.immigration.gov.np/

To apply for a visa from Atlanta, we recommend obtaining the visa through the embassy by filling out the visa application and shipping your original passport and supporting documents to their office in Washington, D.C by FedEx or UPS.  Here is the address:

Embassy of Nepal
2730 34th Place, NW
Washington, D.C. 20007

It is important to review the requirements for visas on the Nepal embassy website and ensure your application and all supporting documents are accurate.  Here is the link to their website with detailed information: https://us.nepalembassy.gov.np/visa/

You should include a self-addressed USPS (US Postal Service Express Mail or Priority Mail), FedEx, or UPS prepaid envelope (please make note of the tracking number) so the embassy can return your passport and visa to your home or office.

U.S. citizens will pay the government’s visa fee (by money order or cashier’s check payable to the “Embassy of Nepal, Washington, D.C.” with full name and address of the applicant written on it) of $30 for a 15-day multiple entry visa, $50 for a 30-day multiple entry visa, or $125 for a 90-day multiple entry visa.  Visas will be valid for 6 months upon date of issue.  U.S. citizens also have the option to apply for a 5-year multiple entry tourist visa that allows visitors to stay in Nepal up to 180 days per year (the government fee for this visa is $160).  The 5-year visa requires a bank statement with a minimum account balance of $10,000 and international health insurance valid for at least 6 months from the date of the visa application.  We recommend getting the Geo Blue Voyager Single Trip plan: https://www.geobluetravelinsurance.com/products/single-trip/voyager-5-overview.cfm?link_id=230353&header=y&footer=y&personalized=y

Visas usually take about one week for processing once the embassy receives all the necessary documents.

Other things to consider:

  • U.S. citizens must have a valid passport that does not expire within six months of your date of entry into Nepal and at least one blank visa page (please note that an endorsement page is different from a visa page).
  • Nepal now requires all visitors to have a COVID-19 vaccine certificate.
  • It may be possible to apply for a visa upon arrival at Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu, however, we recommend obtaining the visa at a Nepal embassy or consulate before starting your journey.  This will prevent being denied boarding on your departing flight and ensure smooth entry into Nepal.  It is also possible to obtain visa upon entry through a land border.  Please visit the U.S. Department of State’s Nepal travel page and review the Entry, Exit and Visa Requirements section for more information: https://travel.state.gov/content/travel/en/international-travel/International-Travel-Country-Information-Pages/Nepal.html
  • It is recommended to purchase travel insurance before any international trip in case of medical emergencies.  We advise getting the Geo Blue Voyager Single Trip Plan.
