How to Apply for a Mozambique Visa in Atlanta

Many tourists from Atlanta may not know about the hidden treasures of Mozambique, but with the increase in travel to East Africa, more and more people are discovering the African wildlife and tropical beaches of the “Pearl of the Indian Ocean”.

The Republic of Mozambique, located in southeastern Africa on the Indian Ocean, is slightly larger than the combined land areas of Georgia, Florida, Alabama, Tennessee, South Carolina, and North Carolina.  Portuguese settlers ruled the area for more than 400 years before the country gained independence in 1975.  The official language remains Portuguese, although most residents speak one of the native languages as their primary language.  English-speakers are also common, especially in tourist-friendly regions along the coast and around major cities, particularly in southern Mozambique.  The combination of European and African influences has created unique cultural and culinary experiences.

The largest city in Mozambique, the capital of Maputo, is located on a coastal bay fed by four rivers.  The city’s architecture reflects five centuries of Portuguese colonization, including such landmarks as Independence Square, the Maputo Railway Station, the Fortress of Maputo museum, and the neoclassical Maputo City Hall.  Later additions include a bronze statue of Samora Machel, Mozambique’s first president.  Beira, the second largest port, is located on the Mozambique Channel in the central part of the country.  On the northern coast, Nacala is the deepest natural port in East Africa.

While the cities offer historic sites, nightlife, and Western amenities, eco-tourists and big-game hunters are attracted to Mozambique’s natural settings.  The Zambezi River splits the country into two regions: the rugged highlands and hills of the northern section, and to the south, the coastal lowlands, plateaus, and Lebombo Mountains.  Mozambique has 13 forest preserves, seven national parks, and a dozen nature, game, wildlife, and conservation reserves.  Popular eco-tourist operators include safaris through the African Bush Camps and Imvelo lodges and tent camps; Imire Lodge’s rhino and wildlife conservation programs; and Wild Horizon’s elephant camp at Victoria Falls.  For a different type of adventure, several vendors offer bush camp safaris in special regions set aside for big-game trophy hunting.

Other visitors from Atlanta are drawn to the honey-colored beaches, swaying palms, and turquoise waters of Mozambique’s 1,535-mile coastline.  The country is one of the top scuba diving and snorkeling destinations in the world, with whale sharks, manta rays, humpback whales, and dugongs (similar to manatees) common among its tropical reefs.  One must-see designation is the Island of Mozambique in the Indian Ocean, the country’s original capital.  Connected to the mainland by an 11,200-foot bridge, the entire island is designated as a UN World Heritage Site.  Other popular beaches include the Quirimbas Archipelago, a set of 32 islands featuring coral reefs and old forts; the seafood of tranquil Inhaca Islands; Ponta do Ouro near the South African border, popular with divers, surfers, and fishermen; Vamizi Island to the north near Tanzania; romantic Medjumbe Island; the boutique resorts of Azura Benguerra Island, and laid-back Tofo Beach.

Mozambique Visa Requirements

Citizens of the United States and other countries who are fully vaccinated against COVID-19 can enter Mozambique without having to take a PCR test.  Unvaccinated adults and children older than age 11 will need to pass a PCR test.  While masks and other preventative measures remain in place in certain settings, the rules may change frequently as new COVID variants arise.  The U.S. Embassy in Mozambique provides current information at its website, https://travel.state.gov/content/travel/en/international-travel/International-Travel-Country-Information-Pages/Mozambique.html.  Proof of yellow fever vaccination is also required if you are arriving from a country where that disease exists.  You can obtain a yellow fever vaccination for $50 upon arrival if you do not have a yellow card.

Most foreign nationals are required to obtain a visa before entering Mozambique. (Citizens of 10 nearby African nations are exempt.) While student, business, and residency visas are available, most visitors obtain a tourist visa.  Tourist visas are available for one visit up to 30 days over a 60-day period, or for multiple entries over a 90-day period.  All types of tourist visas must first be used within 60 days of the issuance date.

Visa applicants must hold a U.S. passport valid for at least six months from their date of entry to Mozambique and it should contain at least two blank visa pages.  Citizens of other countries who reside in the United States and Canada must submit a copy of their permanent residence status.

Obtaining a Mozambique Visa from Atlanta

U.S. citizens wishing to enter Mozambique for the purposes of tourism or business are not required to obtain a visa at this time.  For the latest entry requirements, please click on the link to the U.S. Department of State website mentioned in the preceding paragraph.

Atlanta tourists who fly into Mozambique from the United States (or other countries) must obtain a visa before starting their journey.  Those who arrive by overland routes from neighboring countries can generally obtain a visa at their port of entry.  Still, authorities recommend obtaining a visa in advance of your trip to make sure you are not turned away at the border.

The Republic of Mozambique maintains two official offices in the United States where it issues visas.  Application forms and visa information are available through the main embassy in Washington D.C. (https://usa.embamoc.gov.mz/?lang=en) and at the Permanent Mission to the United Nations in New York City (https://mozambique-un.org).

You can apply in person at either location or by mail.  Visa applications are available at https://mozambique-un.org/wp-content/uploads/2017/02/visaform-MOZAMBIQUE.pdf.  Print, complete, and sign the application form.  Then scan the application, your passport, and other documents listed below into a PDF file.  Next, email the PDF plus your photos to the embassy or consulate email address on their respective website.  They will forward your PDF to immigration officials in Mozambique for review, which typically takes one to two weeks. If your documents are in order, the embassy will contact you to schedule an in-person visit or arrange mailing.

When you apply, submit a passport that meets previous requirements above as well as:

  • Two passport-sized color photos taken against a white background.
  • Visa application.
  • Confirmed flight and hotel reservation, or a letter of invitation from a Mozambique resident with whom you will be staying. Invitations from non-Mozambique citizens must be accompanied by their DIRE proof of residency.
  • Children under the age of 18 must submit a parental travel consent letter and a copy of their birth certificate.
  • Self-addressed envelope or a pre-paid airbill with tracking number (preferably from FedEx), unless you visit the embassy or consulate in person.
  • Money order for visa fees. It should be payable to the Embassy of Mozambique for the Washington embassy, or to the Mozambique Mission for the New York office.

The visa fees vary by number of entries and speed of service. A single-entry visa costs $160 for one stay lasting up to 30 days. The 90-day multiple-entry tourist visa costs $180.  Visas are normally issued within 10 days after the consulate receives approval from immigration officials and your physical documents.  However, if you require expedited service (issued within three days), the fees are $220 for a single entry and $250 for multiple entries.
