How to Apply for a Liberia Visa in Houston

Greater Houston is the fifth most-populous metropolitan area in the United States with a population of over 7 million residents.  Houston is one of America’s most ethnically diverse cities.  With over 145 different languages being spoken in this global city, it is no surprise Houston has plenty of great restaurants offering delicious cuisine from all over the world, including several West African restaurants.  This is a fast-growing and youthful city that attracts entrepreneurs, corporate businesspeople, international investors, and students.  Houston is the home to the country’s oil and gas industry and is also home to 350 aerospace and aviation companies.  Greater Houston encompasses nine counties and includes the cities of Sugar Land, Baytown, Conroe, Pasadena, Pearland, The Woodlands, and Galveston.  There are about 3,000 Liberian immigrants living in Houston and the city is home to several nonprofit organizations and church groups that host cultural events and provide services to the Liberian community.  Texas Southern University, an historically black university, played host to former Liberian president Ellen Johnson Sirleaf when she visited Houston in 2012.

Liberia is the first and oldest modern republic in Africa, but in terms of demographics, it is a youthful nation—63% of its population is less than 25 years old.  Liberia is a lush, tropical country with vast natural beauty that borders Sierra Leone, Guinea, Ivory Coast, and the Atlantic Ocean.  Visitors to Liberia will fly into Roberts International Airport, which has a newly constructed passenger terminal and will soon have a new cargo terminal.  The airport has an historical connection to Houston: it was selected as a pre-determined emergency landing site for NASA’s space shuttle program because of its long runway.  Although the Liberian economy relies on the exportation of minerals and agricultural commodities through its seaports, the redevelopment of the country’s airport will provide a boost to small businesses seeking to export higher-value (perishable) products to international markets.  Houston-based entrepreneurs with experience in international trade and marketing can find opportunities here to make money and help Liberians do business with the world.  Liberia is gaining in popularity as a tourist destination for heritage tours as more Americans want to understand their ancestral culture and history.  It is also a country where visitors enjoy the beauty and serenity of its beach resorts.

Obtaining a Liberian Visa from Houston

Visas for Liberia are issued by the Liberian government in the United States.  The Liberian government is represented by three consulates in New York City, Atlanta, and Minneapolis, along with one embassy located in Washington, D.C.  To apply for a Liberian visa from Houston, you can appear in person at the embassy or you can send the required application documents by US Mail, FedEx, or UPS to this address:

Embassy of the Republic of Liberia
5201 16th Street N.W.
Washington, D.C. 20011

It is important to review the requirements for visas on the Liberian embassy website and ensure your application and all supporting documents are accurate.  Here is the link to the embassy website with detailed information:  Embassy of Liberia - Consular Services (liberianembassyus.org).  You will also bring a self-addressed USPS (US Postal Service Express Mail or Priority Mail), FedEx, or UPS self-addressed prepaid envelope (please make note of the tracking number) along with a money order made payable to “Embassy of Liberia” to pay the visa fee.  The visa fee for U.S. citizens is $160 and the processing time will take about 2 weeks.  If you need the visa faster, there is an option to pay an additional $75 to have the visa processed the same day or within 5 business days for an additional $50.  If you absolutely must have the visa processed in one day, we suggest appearing in person at the embassy or hiring a visa agent to assist with the process.

Other things to consider:

  • Liberians that are now U.S. citizens and traveling to Liberia with their American passport must apply for a visa.
  • Your U.S. passport must be signed; the signature page of your passport is located opposite the data page that has your name and photo.
  • All visitors to Liberia are required to have a valid World Health Organization (WHO) card with yellow fever vaccination. Please use the following link from the Center for Disease Control website to find the nearest clinic offering the yellow fever vaccine: Search for Stamaril yellow fever vaccination clinics | Travelers' Health | CDC
