How to Apply for a Ghana Visa in Philadelphia
Philadelphia is the largest city in the state of Pennsylvania and is one of the oldest cities in the United States. Founded in 1682 by Englishman William Penn, a social reformer and champion of liberty, he named the city Philadelphia using the Greek term meaning “brotherly love”. Philadelphia has the nickname “City of Brotherly Love” and is nowadays more casually known by locals and non-locals alike as “Philly”. The Philadelphia metropolitan area has over 6 million people (America’s eighth-largest metropolis) and includes cities and towns in the states of New Jersey, Delaware, and Maryland, in addition to Pennsylvania. Philadelphia has a large population of West Africans immigrants and there is a neighborhood in the southwest part of the city known as “Little Africa”, Immigrants from Ghana have been coming to Philadelphia for decades; some Ghanaians come here to attend school at one of the dozens of colleges and universities in the metropolitan area. Ghana’s first president, Kwame Nkrumah, came to Philadelphia in 1935 to study at Lincoln University and would later attend graduate school at the University of Pennsylvania (Penn). Coincidentally, Penn is one of only a few universities in the United States that teach Twi—a major language spoken in Ghana.
Ghana is a West African nation of 31 million people that has over 100 ethnic groups speaking nearly 80 languages. The country has 335 miles of beautiful coastline along the Gulf of Guinea and Atlantic Ocean, and it shares a border with Ivory Coast, Burkina Faso, and Togo. Its land area is roughly twice the size of the state of Pennsylvania. The region was home to several empires for centuries (led by the Kingdom of Ashanti) before foreign powers began battling for dominance during the era of European colonization. Ghana was one of the few African states that actively resisted colonization during the 1700s and 1800s, fighting for more than a century against Great Britain’s effort to control the country. Finally, after decades as a British colony, Ghana became the first country in Africa to gain full political and economic independence in 1957. Tourists from the Philadelphia area can learn more about some of this history by visiting sites such as Independence Square, Cape Coast Castle, the W.E.B. Du Bois Centre, and the Manhiya Palace Museum (in Kumasi). Others will enjoy the natural attractions of Ghana such as the rainforests of Kakum National Park, the savannahs of Mole National Park, Wli Waterfalls, and the numerous beautiful beaches in the Western Region.
