How to Apply for a France Visa in Omaha
France – the world’s top tourist destination – drew a record 100 million-plus travelers in 2023. Some five million U.S. citizens visited that year, including visitors from American cities such as Omaha. Americans providing the largest share of international visitors to Paris at 12%. France’s “classical European architecture, rich culture, internationally renowned wineries, and even pristine Mediterranean beaches offer something for everyone,” GoWithGuide stated. “The country is also home to a whopping 49 UNESCO World Heritage Sites, including famous sites such as Mont-Saint-Michel, as well as many lesser known gems.” (https://gowithguide.com/blog/tourism-in-france-statistics-2023-all-you-need-to-know-5275)
European France (or Metropolitan France) is located in Western Europe, where it borders Belgium, Germany, Italy, Luxembourg, Monaco, Spain, and Switzerland. Its coast lies along the Mediterranean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean, where it shares a maritime border with the United Kingdom. However, the government of the French Republic also includes French Guiana in South America, the French West Indies in the Caribbean Sea, and various islands in the Indian and Pacific oceans. Those islands, plus former French colonies such as Algiers, span almost 250,000 square miles and account for most of the world’s 310 million French speakers.
More than 2,000 years ago, Metropolitan France was part of the Roman Empire. By the Middle Ages, France had evolved into a feudal kingdom and a global power, spawning both a colonial empire and the French Renaissance during the 16th Century. However, from the 1500s through World War II, France was involved in several European wars and internal conflicts (including 1789’s French Revolution). Today’s semi-presidential French Republic was established in 1958. Despite hundreds of years of turmoil, France maintains a global status as a center of art, culture, cuisine, fashion, and science.
The country of more than 68 million enjoys the world’s seventh-largest economy and third-largest in Europe, with GDP estimated at almost $4.3 trillion in 2024. “France is an economically refined nation with a large, diverse, and sophisticated consumer base,” the U.S. International Trade Administration (ITA) stated. “While manufacturing has declined as a percentage of GDP, many of France’s remaining industries, such as aerospace and pharmaceuticals, are still world leaders and receptive to foreign partners and suppliers. Its comparatively affluent populace is a leading consumer of services, particularly in the digital, educational, and travel sectors.” (https://www.trade.gov/country-commercial-guides/france-market-opportunities) Trade relations between the United States and France date back to 1778, with trade in goods and services reaching a record $153.8 billion in 2022. The U.S. is also the largest foreign investor in France at more than $112 billion. “U.S. exports to France include industrial chemicals, aircraft and engines, electronic components, telecommunications, computer software, computers and peripherals, analytical and scientific instrumentation, medical instruments and supplies, and broadcasting equipment,” the ITA also noted. Tourism is an important sector of the economy, contributing almost 9% of France’s economic output in 2023 while reaching a record €246 billion (US $260 billion), according to the World Travel and Tourism Council (https://wttc.org/news-article/frances-travel-and-tourism-broke-all-records-last-year-wttc-research-reveals). While most foreign visitors to France hail from Europe, the United States ranks among the top 10 sources of visitors and led international visitors to the capital city of Paris. The 2024 Olympic Games in Paris was expected to help boost tourist revenues to €254 billion while the sector accounted for 10% of all French jobs, WTTC added. Most tourists from the Omaha area head to Paris, the world’s third-most visited city. The center of the Ile-de-France region, the city and its surrounding are known for such architectural landmarks as the Eiffel Tower, the Arc de Triomphe, and the Palace of Versailles. Museums in the Ile-de-France area include the Louvre, Musée d'Orsay, and Musée National d'Art Moderne, plus centers for the works of sculptor Auguste Rodin and painter Pablo Picasso. The historic downtown district along the Seine is one of the French Republic’s 53 UNESCO World Heritage Sites, along with the Cathedral of Notre Dame (top tourist site in France), the Palace of Fontainebleau, and the medieval fair village of Provins. For kids of all ages, there’s Disneyland Paris.
Beyond the cultural treasures of Paris and other major cities, France lures visitors from the Omaha area to its ski resorts, beaches, picturesque rural villages, gardens, and parks. The largest tourist attraction outside of Paris is the tidal island and commune Mont-Saint-Michel, another UNESCO site in Normandy. The French Riviera along the Mediterranean coast (one of the world’s first modern resort areas) draws more than 10 million tourists a year to its beaches, golf courses, and restaurants. Other top destinations include the natural sites of Marseille and the Provence region; the castles along the Loire River; and the mountainous island of Corsica.
“Mighty mountains, wild rivers, green hills, Alpine valleys – the astonishing diversity of the French landscape is one of the country's biggest draws,” Lonely Planet reported. Top outdoor activities for Omaha-based travelers include hiking the French Pyrenees, cycling alongside the Loire River, skiing or snowboarding at Chamonix in the Alps, surfing at Biarritz on the Atlantic, paddling Dordogne River, kayaking the Calanques on the Riviera, scuba diving in the Mediterranean at Réserve Naturelle de Scandola, and whitewater rafting through Gorges du Verdon – the largest canyon in Europe. How to Make a Short-Term Visit to France
Citizens of the United States and many other countries living in the Omaha area can visit France for up to 90 days without acquiring a visa. France is among the roughly 30 European countries participating in the Schengen Agreement, which allows visa-free movement among those nations. The Schengen exemption covers tourist, business, and student travelers. If your passport is not issued by one of the Schengen Zone’s 60+ visa-free countries, you will need to obtain a short-term Schengen visa (see section below). Further details for U.S. visitors planning to visit France are available from the country’s embassy in Washington D.C. at https://franceintheus.org/spip.php?rubrique102.
To enter France, your passport must be valid for at least three months beyond your departure date from the Schengen region, the U.S. State Department noted. The passport needs to contain at least one blank page. You may also be asked to produce your return plane ticket and proof of sufficient funds to last throughout your stay, the department added.
Visitors from Omaha can also travel to other Schengen countries during their stay in France. The Schengen Zone includes all but two members of the European Union (Ireland and Cyprus), plus four non-EU nations: Iceland, Lichtenstein, Norway, and Switzerland. {NOTE: The United Kingdom is not part of the Schengen Zone.}
However, an additional set of rules are expected to take effect in mid-2025 that affect non-visa travelers. Citizens of the United States and other visa-exempt countries will need to obtain a new travel authorization through the European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS) before arriving in any participating European Union countries. To check on the countries affected by ETIAS, upcoming implementation dates, and to apply once the program goes live, visit https://travel-europe.europa.eu/etias_en.
Obtaining a National Visa for France
Residents of the Omaha area who do not qualify for visa-free travel or who want to spend more than 90 days in France must obtain a national visa. You can apply by visiting any regional office of VFS Global, France’s visa issuance partner. Residents of Nebraska and other states in the Midwestern region of the United States should use the VFS Application Center in Chicago (142, E. Ontario St, 17th Floor, 60611, Chicago IL; https://visa.vfsglobal.com/usa/en/fra/attend-centre/Chicago). Hours of operation are from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., Monday through Friday, by appointment only. After VFS takes your application, it is forwarded to the French embassy in Washington, D.C. for a final decision and issuance. For the full list of VFS’s 10 centers for French visas, visit https://visa.vfsglobal.com/usa/en/fra/attend-centre.
The French government offers several short-term and long-term national visas for travelers in such categories as tourist, business, student, digital nomad/remote worker, and long-term residence. Details about national visas can be found at the government website https://france-visas.gouv.fr/en/ and the VFS Global site for French visas, https://visa.vfsglobal.com/usa/en/fra/.
The basic steps include:
- Determining whether you need a visa and, if so, what type. The government offers a “visa wizard” to guide you at https://france-visas.gouv.fr/en/web/france-visas/visa-wizard. The wizard will also tell you what documents you will need for your specific type of visa.
- Create an account and fill out your online application at https://france-visas.gouv.fr/en-US/web/france-visas/.
- Book your appointment with VFS. Book at least two weeks in advance of your trip for a short-stay visa or one month ahead for a long-stay visa. (NOTE: You may be able to submit your application biometrics without visiting a VFS Center by using the Visa At Your Doorstep (VAYD) service via https://visa.vfsglobal.com/usa/en/fra/interim.)
- Pay your fees (listed at https://france-visas.gouv.fr/documents/d/france-visas/frais-de-visa-anglais). You may be able to pay online; if not, fees are collected in person by VFS.
- Bring your application and all supporting documents to any VFS Center. Biometrics (fingerprints and photos) will be taken. Appointments typically take about 20 minutes.
- Track your application online. Most visa applications take 15 days, but it can be as long as 45 days, so apply well in advance. However, you cannot apply more than six months ahead of your departure date.
- Retrieve your passport in person (or, in some situations, by mail) once the French Embassy returns it to VFS.
The type of documentation required varies by type of visa, nationality, and country of residence. Details about the short-stay visa can be found at https://france-visas.gouv.fr/en/web/france-visas/tourist-or-private-visit. If you apply for a long-stay visa (https://france-visas.gouv.fr/en/web/france-visas/long-stay-visa) for tourist, professional, educational, or family reasons, you will need to provide additional information and be subject to an online verification procedure.
When you arrive in France, you will need to present:
- Passport issued within the last 10 years and valid for at least three months beyond your departure date.
- A visa (if required).
- Proof of accommodation (hotel reservation or validated certificate if staying with a relative.)
- Proof of financial means to support yourself during your stay.
- Return plane ticket (or proof of financial means to purchase one).
- Medical insurance covering your stay. International medical insurance from GeoBlue can be purchased from Visa Supply online through the following link: ⇒Order Now.
- For professional visitors, documentation on your professional qualifications and list of organizations plan to visit.
- For in-transit visitors, proof of your ability to enter the destination country, such as visa, transportation tickets, and proof of accommodations.)
Obtaining a Schengen Visa for Foreign Nationals
Residents of the Omaha area holding passports from countries that do not have a visa-free travel agreement for the Schengen Zone (including those residing in the United States) will need to obtain a Schengen visa to visit France and other countries in the Schengen Zone. This traditional visa, affixed to your passport, allows you to stay up to 90 days during a six-month period.
The visa is available for single entry, multiple entries, and airport transit within an international airport. Citizens of certain countries may need to obtain a Schengen airport transit visa if they are changing planes within the Schengen Zone. The countries whose citizens need a Schengen visa, exceptions to transit visa rules, and other details can be found at this European Union site: https://home-affairs.ec.europa.eu/policies/schengen-borders-and-visa/visa-policy_en. General details about the visa and an online application are available at https://home-affairs.ec.europa.eu/policies/schengen-borders-and-visa/visa-policy/applying-schengen-visa_en.
You should apply for the Schengen visa through the country where you will spend the most time. If France is your primary destination (or your port of entry if you plan to spend equal amounts of time in multiple countries), you need to apply through the same French government and VFS Global websites listed in the previous section, and follow the same processes as above.
Apply at least one month before your trip. “Waiting times for appointments and for processing applications will vary depending on your nationality and the time of year,” the French embassy in Washington, D.C. stated (https://franceintheus.org/spip.php?rubrique102).
The Schengen Visa allows you to move freely between the countries in the Schengen Zone for up to 90 days within a 180-day period. If your application is accepted, you will receive a sticker (called a vignette) to add to your passport. The vignette includes the type of visa issued, start and end dates, and any conditions attached to the visa.
